Please don't call me a 'customer' of the city. That's not the relationship I want with my city. clmarohn.substack.com/p/a-city-we-...
Text: When residents come to see their city as something they pay for and are owed in return, they start acting like customers. And customers don’t build anything. They make demands. They file complaints. They wait for service to be delivered to them. The agency that used to belong to a neighborhood gets handed over to a bureaucracy that, over time, learns to tend to its own survival before it serves the people who fund it.

Here's a great list of considerations for defining a new leadership for Ontario. This is moving beyond the tired, old "left, right and centre" approach towards an emphasis on tomorrow over yesterday: It proposes moving from a mentality stuck in the 1970s into the 21st century. nw1q04h.s.gy/i7856L

When we hollow out our local newsrooms, they too often are left relying on police reports as "news". That's a real problem.

I love Monica Tap’s larger-than-life “Road to Lily Dale I”. In a decentralized #WaterlooRegion with few unifying symbols, the Grand River is a common muse. Public art and publicly accessible galleries are not just a nice-to-have. They are part of what makes a neighbourhood worth living in.
Sam in a blue sweater with yellow and red stripes, standing in front of a painted canvas that takes up the whole frame. White, pink, brown and green impressionistic strokes depict the grand River valley in Monica Tap’s “Road to Lily Dale I”Photo of land back camp, sun setting over a drum circle and tipi, which is printed on the side of a storage container in downtown Kitchener. Renovated office buildings, a brick heritage building, and a pedestrian are in the background. Close up view of an undulating wall surrounding a garden, made of interweaved willow branches. Side view of Aporia, a giant orange metal squiggly sculpture.
