We went to the beach by the Edmonds ferry terminal today and there were actually people swimming there! We also got to see a cute seal playing around in the water.

It's quite the trek to get down to Seattle from Bellingham. We're going to take the light rail on Friday for the Belltown Art Walk. It takes longer, but we'll hopefully miss some traffic. Plus we like taking the train into the city.
A street in Seattle lined with trees. There's a brick building across the street next to a parking lot. The side of the building has a mural on it. The sky is bright blue.

I've been using Booda Butter Suds of Love to wash my hair for a long time now and I have some really good hair days. I can't remember the last time I used a conditioner. I'd like to find a good hair oil or maybe just go back to using a conditioner bar so it doesn't get really dry, but it seems fine.

If we're still in the PNW next year, we need to plan a trip up the mountain on a sunny day. The fog was neat, but I cannot handle another drive to Artist Point through a cloud. I was delighted until I began to panic.

They came back, shouted hello twice, and knocked on our door again. My neighbor said they were salespeople for an internet company, so I feel justified in my annoyance.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Well, it has turned out to be a migraine day. I really didn't see it coming even though I was talking to my co-workers this morning about feeling really sleepy and foggy today compared with yesterday. One thing I don't remember experiencing before is voracious hunger.

I was talking with a co-worker yesterday about losing our brothers about a year apart and how we feel around the anniversary. Last night, I decided to listen to an audiobook for the first time in a very long time. I chose a book that I knew nothing about that had a pretty cover.

The food people need is in grocery stores. They just need the permission slips (cash) to access it. Food banks should not exist. They are a symptom of failed policy. They exist because universal basic income doesn't. We need UBI and it's a fight because the people doing this are doing it on purpose:

A week's worth of groceries, including two boxes of formula by bike? No, you don't need a car for that, just some enabling infrastructure and a bike designed for the task. We don't expect everyone to live this way, but we do expect cities to enable the decision if people make it.

I can't believe I've been working in construction permitting for over ten years now. I sometimes think about how much more I could've learned these past ten years, but we've also moved 7 times in that same timeframe, so I'm giving myself a break on that.

We sometimes have to hurry into our apartment when one of the neighborhood cats follows us home. Tonight I peeked out at him standing on our porch and he was looking around like he'd just been abandoned by his family.

We had a great day at our friends' house in the Skagit Valley for their annual fall festival and apple pressing party! We have a huge glass jug full of fresh-pressed juice that we're going to make into spiced apple cider tomorrow.
A selfie of Brian and Marina standing between two rows of apple trees. We're holding freshly picked apples up to our faces like we're going to eat them. We're both wearing sunglasses. Brian is wearing an Irish walking cap and Marina is wearing a camo baseball cap that says, "You are on Native land."

I found out last night that our healthcare premiums and out-of-pocket maximums are going way up next year. It's not surprising, but it's still infuriating. I want to choose the option where you don't pay a premium and just get a set amount to use on healthcare, but I'm terrified of medical debt.

Our gas heater had an annual test or maintenance today. They pushed in a little grate at the bottom that has been sticking out a little since we moved in. Now we can see a little strip of old carpet beneath the heater and a burn mark on the floor. Somehow, I don't feel safer.

I started a bag of chopped vegetables to make my own stock. I'm using a plastic freezer bag for now, but I'd like to use something reusable eventually. Any tips on what to use as a container or what to add or not add to the stock? What's your favorite soup recipe?

I got started a little late, but my split pea soup is almost done! I think I'd be able to make a double batch if I had an 8 qt. pot instead of a 6 qt. pot. I can eat the same thing over and over again, so I like batch cooking. I think I could probably just eat one dish all day long.

A little stone bridge with two arches over a creek at the edge of a lake. There's a cluster of small evergreen trees on one side of the bridge. It's a foggy day. There are some bushes at the bottom of one of the arches.

There's a cute little stone bridge down at the creek. There were also some cute birds swimming and eating in the creek.
The trail goes through shrubbery with a few evergreen trees on a foggy day. There's a small pool of water on the left side of the trail.A view of the lake from the trail. There are hillsides on the other side of the lake covered in fog. The "massive weekly grocery haul" is a symptom of car-dependent sprawl, not a universal rule of life. Healthy cities don't force you to drive to a warehouse store. Good design makes grabbing fresh food a quick, passive part of your daily walk or bike commute. These straw men arguments bore me.
