AND SPEAKING OF BEING LOUD (bis). Sayako Kishimoto (1939, Nagoya - 1988, Nagoya) Political Opinion Broadcast, 1983
Black-and-white photo of Sayako Kishimoto, holding a microphone and raising her fist.Photo of the screen showing Sayako Kishimoto’s video ‘Political Opinion Broadcast’. Sayako Kishimoto is wearing a red jumper and the subtitle says ‘I want to call for 1988 to mark a fundamental paradigm shift’.Label of Sayako Kishimoto’s video ‘Political Opinion Broadcast’.

In 1983, Sayako Kishimoto ran for the House of Councillors with Zatsumin to (Miscellaneous People's Party), led by queer politician Ken Togo. Her campaign challenged materialism, class inequality and the growing power of money, mass media and technology over everyday life. She opposed the substantial sums required of candidates to stand for election, arguing that they were barriers to political participation, and urged citizens to master these forces rather than become their slaves. Using humour and irreverence, Kishimoto transformed the official electoral broadcast into a platform for feminist and anti-hierarchical politics, famously declaring, 'I am a messenger of hell'.

AND SPEAKING OF BEING LOUD. Atsuko Tanaka (1932, Osaka - 2005, Nara) Work (Bell), 1955/2000
Photo of the artwork ‘Work (Bell)’ by Atsuko Tanaka. On a petrol-blue rug are a row of bells connected to one another. Visitors are invited to press a button and create a lot of noise.Label of the artwork ‘Work (Bell)’ by Atsuko Tanaka.

Atsuko Tanaka joined the avant-garde Gutai Art Association in
1955. At the group's inaugural exhibition at hara Hall in Tokyo that October, she presented twenty electric bells connected by wires
and activated by visitors through a switch. Ringing one after another. the bells create a sequence of sounds unfolding through space and over time, making visitors aware of their relationship to the environment. Tanaka described this work as an invisible painting, in which sound replaces image. For Tanaka, art was not imitation but a search for an 'unknown beauty'.

Saori Akutagawa (1924, Toychashi - 1966, Tokyo) Woman (I), 1955 (fcuk silence)
Photo of the artwork ‘Woman (I)’ by Saori Akutagawa (1955), a portrait painted with dye on cloth, in which the yellow figure radiates anger. Her eyes are wrinkled with anger, her hair looks like flames. I will keep this image in mind for those days filled with rage.Label for the work ‘Woman (I)’ by Saori Akutagawa (1955).

Working oustide established artistic movements, Saori Akutagawa forged her own path as a woman artist in postwar Japan. In the early 1950s, she began to gain recognition for her wild portraits painted with dye on cloth. These two expressive works convey contrasting emotions: one figure, glowing in blazing yellow, radiates anger, while the other, with its exaggerated smile, bursts into laughter. Originally trained as a musician, Akutagawa gave up her ambition to become a singer. As she recalled, 'My husband used to complain about my singing, so I turned to the silent art of painting.' Painting thus became another means of expression, allowing the emotional force of her voice to emerge in visual form.

Sunday morning in good company, for someone whose mind is always counting the share of women and/or racialised people, contemporary art museums are cool. Especially when we have access to the context of the artworks. Mudam, Kaihō. Japanese Women Artists after 1945 🖤 (25/09/2026 > 14/02/2027)
Photo of the Mudam from the outside, with rows of pine trees and the glass-covered top of the building designed by Ieoh Ming Pei.Photo of the entrance to the exhibition 'Kaihō: Japanese Women Artists after 1945'.Label for Yoko Ono’s work, ‘Add Colour (Refugee Boat)’, 2026.

A white boat stands at the centre of this installation, surrounded by white walls, visitors are invited to write, draw and leave messages on both the boat and the walls, using blue and white markers. With each contribution, the space changes, individual words and images accumulate on the boat and walls, creating a shared environment shaped by everyone who takes part. First realised in 2016, the work builds on Ono's early conceptual Add Colour works of the 1960s, which invited participants to add colours directiy on blank carvases.

Ono conceived the work in response to the European/refugee crisis' of 2015, when large numbers of people forced to flee their homes because of war, conflict or persecution lost their lives crossing the Mediterranean in search of safety. The work also resonates with
Onos own childhood during the Second World War. As a child in
Tokyo, she experienced the bombing of the city and the disruption
of wartime displacement. She later remembered the hunger and
deprivation she and her family endured, experiences that shaped
her lifelong commitment to peace. Here, individual gestures accumulate into a collective expression of peace, hope and solidarity.Photograph of Yoko Ono’s artwork, ‘Add Colour (Refugee Boat)’, 2026. There is a boat in the middle of a white space on which visitors have written with blue markers (selection): I hate Mondays, Free Palestine, Lebanon, Art is Political, Refugee Rights Are Human Rights, ACAB...

Daisy Rockwell, who won the International Booker Prize in 2022 for her translation of Geetanjali Shree's Tomb of Sand, is not worried about Nolan's film. She believes the controversy misses the point: that ancient epics are not fragile. "Ancient texts are famously resilient because they have survived countless retellings and renditions," she told The Indian Express. "Epics like the Odyssey and the Mahabharata have survived millennia and one clumsy version is not going to hurt them in any way."

Je suis tombée de le rabbit hole des chats norvégiens et j'ai connecté les informations. (Je découvre aussi qu'apparemment Freyja est à l'origine du mot Friday.) Peut-être que Signe sait reconnaitre les chouettes humaines ?
