In 1624, a #whale stranded at Santa Severa, Italy. It was measured, its anatomy examined. The artist Giovanni Bricci wrote an extensive account, describing the animal—and because words alone weren't enough, he painted it. An artist painted a portrait of the whale! I was so excited… and then THIS:

The Trustees of the British Museum declined to buy the panels of the Franks Casket #OTD in 1858. ‘They had never committed a greater act of folly,’ said the Keeper of Manuscripts. The museum’s Augustus Wollaston Franks – it is named after him – bought it instead. 📸British Museum

On a recent trip to see a friend in historic #Greifswald NE #Germany, we discovered the unexpected in an ancient RC Church, a lifesize 16thC mural of a whale washed up nearby in 1545 and celebrated in a beautiful modern blue glass window in a side chapel. More info in last photo #StainedGlassSunday
A photo from inside a small side chapel of a tall narrow simple modern stained glass window which has the impressionistic shape of a whale as viewed from above running vertically the whole length of the window with the tail at the top and the head at the bottom . The whale is dark blue with a periphery of turquoise set in an opaque colourless glass surround. Photo Copyright Coralie Mills 2024A photo of the whale mural which is vast and coloured grey against a whitewashed wall of the east aisle towards the west end of the church. We can glimpse the main body of the east end of the aisle towards get a sense of scale. The mural was painted in 1545 but looks very modern because it is so simply portrayed. Photo copyright Coralie Mills 2024Another view of the whale mural, this time more front on though cannot get entirely front on because the aisle is quite narrow. For #WorldWhaleDay, the medieval bestiary version of a #whale. 🐳 Bodleian Library, MS. Ashmole 1511 (The Ashmole Bestiary), folio 86v. England, first quarter 13th century. digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/objects/faef... See ALT for more info!
"The whale likes to bask at the surface and sometimes stays there long enough for sand to accumulate on its back. Sailors mistake the whale for an island and try to land on it, with disastrous results. Usually the sailors are doing something to the whale (starting a fire on its back, attaching an anchor, etc.) but it this case they are just gesturing enigmatically. The whale is catching fish by open its mouth and emiting a sweet odor, which causes fish to swim right in."
"Allegory/Moral: The whale who deceives sailors and drags them down to their deaths signifies the devil, who deceives those he drags down to hell. Those of weak faith who give in to the sweet odor of worldly desires will be swallowed up by the devil."
- explanation via https://bestiary.ca/beasts/beast282.htm
