New Paper: Ornaments evolve faster than weapons Combining a new theoretical model of sexually selected trait evolution with comparative analyses across ten clades, we suggest that drift in female preferences accelerates the rate of ornament evolution. royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

First international conference, done! 🤩 I was very proud to present my sparrow work at #ISBE2026 in Turin 🇮🇹 Five days of hearing about really cool research, meeting new (and old) friends, & of course, great food! Very excited to catch up with these (now) familiar faces at ISBE Taiwan in 2028! 🇹🇼

We refine & extend the Y-model heuristic (“mean invariance” hypothesis) to explain why resource limitation reveals tradeoffs + suggestions for what empiricists should measure (hint: it’s not average resource availability in a population, or solely variation in acquisition-allocation). Now in JEB

Influence of the resource acquisition–allocation Y-model’s parameters on the detection of phenotypic trade-offs
Abstract. Phenotypic trade-offs, predicted to occur due to resource limitation, are not commonly detected. For this, the Y-model provides a powerful heuris

Very far outside my comfort zone, but such a worthwhile couple of days at the AI for Science Summer School in Athens last week! It was really fun seeing all the different ways people are using AI across so many areas of science, and I've definitely come away with plenty of new ideas to think about.

Sperm can “age” independently of the male, when stored in male or female reproductive tracts. Our meta-analysis finds widespread evidence across animals (including abstinence in men). Important consequences for fertility, sexual selection, haploid selection! doi.org/10.1098/rspb...
