Cool piece of info we take for granted. Luminosity of the stars is how much light energy they emit into space per second - is comparable to or greater than that of the sun. Source: Book - Universe by Geller, Robert M #astrophysics #astronomy #stars

Parallax - This is how the smart pants Astronomers figure it out how to measure the distances to the stars. You look at the star from two different positions like opposite sides of Earth’s orbit and see how much it “moves” against distant stars. The bigger the shift the closer the star is. #astro

A very fascinating paper went up on the arXiv today! Jesse Han & El-Badry et al. reanalysed the 21 known 'hypervelocity' stars in the #milkyway. They find strong evidence that the LMC (Large Milky/Magellanic Cloud) has a supermassive black hole at its core! 🤯 arxiv.org/abs/2502.00102
A figure from the paper (Figure 4). It shows the locations of known hypervelocity stars as black circles, with the predicted overdensity that the LMC would cause shown in red. Full caption:

Predicted on-sky overdensity of hypervelocity stars originating from a 6 × 105M⊙ supermassive black hole in the
LMC. The black open circles denote the Galactic coordinates of hypervelocity stars detected in the HVS Survey, while the
grey-shaded regions mark areas excluded from the survey. The current position of the LMC is illustrated with a representative
image, and its orbital trajectory is drawn with a red arrow. The forward model incorporating an SMBH in the LMC along with
the selection effects of the HVS Survey predicts a prominent overdensity of HVS in the region enclosed by the red contours. The
overdensity arises because stars are boosted in the direction of the LMC’s orbit. This model accurately reproduces the observed
overdensity location, supporting the hypothesis of an SMBH in the LMC as a source of these stars.

Hubble image of Eta Carinae, the remains of the collapse of a giant molecular cloud. Processed by @Tho_Carp www.flickr.com/photos/19746... 🔭 🧪
The Hubble Space Telescope captured this stunning image of Eta Carinae, a massive star system known for its dramatic outbursts. The nebula surrounding the star is a complex tapestry of gas and dust, glowing in shades of blue and red. The bright blue regions indicate hot, ionized gas, while the red areas show cooler gas. The intricate patterns and filaments in the nebula are the result of powerful stellar winds and radiation from Eta Carinae.

Leo P. This is a star-forming dwarf galaxy, located about 5 million light years away from us (blue stars on the bottom-right side of the image). 🔭 🧪
The image from Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) combines infrared light at wavelengths of 0.9 microns (represented in blue), 1.5 microns (green), and 2.77 microns (red). The stars in Leo P appear blue in comparison to the background galaxies for several reasons. Young, massive stars that are common in star-forming galaxies are predominantly blue. Leo P also is extremely lacking in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, and the resulting “metal-poor” stars tend to be bluer than Sun-like stars. A bubble-like structure at bottom center is a region of ionized hydrogen surrounding a hot, massive O-type star.

NGC 2997 by JWST. Processed by Алексей Кудря (@Alex_A_Lex on X). 🔭 🧪
The James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) has unveiled the majestic spiral galaxy NGC 2997 in exquisite detail. The image showcases the galaxy's grand design, with prominent spiral arms winding outwards from a luminous central core. The arms are studded with clusters of young, hot stars, while the core harbors a supermassive black hole. The image also reveals a delicate dusting of interstellar dust lanes, tracing the galaxy's intricate structure.

Open star cluster Westerlund 1. A home to a variety of young, massive stars. This image was presented today on AAS Nova. aasnova.org/2025/01/14/a... 🔭 🧪
The James Webb Space Telescope's NIRCam captures a stunning view of Westerlund 1. Thousands of stars shine brightly, their light diffracted into colorful cross patterns due to the telescope's optics. Interstellar dust and gas glow in shades of red and orange, forming intricate nebulae.

The insane resolution of JWST. This is a protoplanetary disc surrounding a young star, that lies about 1350 light-years from Earth. 🔭 🧪
An image made of three panels. The largest on the left shows the NIRCam image of a nebula with two bright stars. A skewed box in the top-right points to a second panel on the right, with a MIRI image of that area. A tiny box in the centre of that panel is blown up in a third panel below, with a zoomed-in, combined MIRI and NIRCam image of a yellow and orange blob.

Great Mission. But also very proud of the work with did in Brazil prior GAIA using our ground based telescope at Pico Dos Dias, for a massive survey of OC, and GC. Years later comparing our data with GAIA and see the numbers as close as they are, what a feeling.

This infrared image captures the spiral galaxy NGC 1566, located in the constellation Dorado. The galaxy's swirling arms are illuminated by young, hot stars, while the central region glows with the light of older stars. The image reveals intricate details of the galaxy's structure, including dust lanes and star-forming regions. NGC 1566 is a type SBc spiral galaxy, meaning it has a prominent bar structure at its center. The galaxy is also known as the "Spanish Dancer Galaxy" due to its shape, which resembles a flamenco dancer.
