New paper alert! ⚠️ How does our environment impact our everyday, free-flowing thoughts? We used music as a window into the factors that influence the content of these thoughts. Nearly 1800 participants reported open-ended thoughts while listening to 120 excerpts of music.

When people listen to music, they often imagine remarkably similar stories. A study in Nature Communications shows these shared imaginings selectively rely on stimulus-specific patterns in a set of modality-general brain regions. go.nature.com/4gKKw0l #Neuroskyence 🧪
This is figure 4, which shows triple pattern similarity between participants was used to identify brain activation patterns that are stimulus-specific and shared between all experimental conditions.

Music evokes much more in listeners than perceptions of pitch, rhythm, and harmony. The imaginative, semantic, and immersive aspects of listening deserve more attention from neuroscience (9/)

Beyond auditory regions, these patterns of activation index a modality-general process of meaning-making that is happening for instrumental music as much as for speech (8/)

Yet across these conditions distinct, stimulus-specific patterns of activation emerged in higher order areas, including the default mode network, regions that also carry narrative meaning in films, and in spoken stories across languages (7/)

Brain activity that occurs while hearing Tchaikovsky, hearing a spoken story about knights, and telling the story back can't be merely tracking acoustics; these three sound very different. (6/)

Music and speech stimuli were matched one-to-one, so in one condition listeners heard the Tchaikovsky excerpt, and in another they heard a spoken story about knights battling. This held the imagined content constant while the sound reaching the ear completely changed (5/)

For example, an excerpt from Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony evoked stories of knights battling in front of a castle (4/)

In this new study, we used fMRI to scan people's brains while they listened to music, while they listened to spoken versions of the stories we knew from previous work they were likely to imagine, and while they recounted what they imagined (3/)

Previous behavioral work from our lab (Margulis et al., 2022, PNAS) showed that people tend to imagine highly similar stories when listening to music they've never heard before (2/)
