Everyone and their mom has had a comment about this now but I guess I feel the need to chime in: I think a lot of the comments are really misunderstanding that this is not a “fanart bad” post, this is “it sucks to go to an indie comics show and see multiple tables without a single comic” post

I think it’s funny people are feeling this is an attack on fan art, and I, a person who does both Artist Alley and Indie Comics thought this was an attack on GRID WALLS. GUYS ARTIST ALLEYERS ARE RIGHT VERTICAL SPACE IS FREE AD SPACE WE MUST BUILD UUUUUP

There’s a “so you hate waffles?” moment happening with this post that’s kinda painful to witness bc I highly doubt the OP made this to paint all fanart sellers as greedy parasites upon indie comic shows like some ppl are saying in the QRTs😭

We need to make sure we’re directing the frustration at the right people. Most of the responsibility falls on the show organizers more than the artists submitting their applications. It’s the show’s responsibility to curate their vendor/artist alley for the type of show they want.

MICE is a particularly well-run indie show, due to curation as well as supporting comics year-round. Local creators need money, community and education to create independent work, and having a larger structure that goes beyond a one-weekend show is how you see the art you want to see.

Anyways…sent my first agent query for a graphic novel proposal. Got my first rejection the day right after. Yay.

This being said, I too hate it when people with no physical comics show up with just prints and keychains. I’m an artist alleyer too and I do think some artists have an invasive attitude towards indie comics spaces which they only see as hip cool new spaces to expand their small businesses.

My contribution to indie comics tabling discourse is TCAF tables cost $500. I’m squeezing it for every square foot including airspace! As long as you got comics I don’t care your table has Christmas lights. Just don’t play music.

Sometimes I overdraw and the thing totally flops, makes me feel like I’m progressively becoming uglier, but this time I’m pretty relieved it’s doing alright.

Reminder - Webcomics mostly survive off word of mouth. If you enjoy something then talk about it or recommend it to people. I know we're in an age where rage drives clicks so maybe try to help a creator out by talking about their work.

I somehow got the ARC for Frank Miller's Push the Wall and I gotta say Frank Miller is such a quotable unhinged maniac it makes me mad to admit he's one of the biggest influences on my sense of art and story (like every other comic book artist who read tDKR as a teenager)

I was talking to someone about wanting to "break into comics" and they laughed at me and said "we're already living the same life style no? You draw another book, go to con. I draw another book. I go to con."

I don't really like to talk about my design process because I come from the school of show, don't tell. Also I really enjoy interpreting things for myself so I want to give other people that. But it's been a really long time since these original pins were made so let's talk about the emblem designs!

Does anyone else think it’s crazy that there's this world of lore, that millions of people fell in love with, and characters in it like Osiris, Saint-14, Eris, the Drifter, Savathun, Xivu Arath… …and somehow that world was mishandled by executives in a way that made the game shut down?

Sometimes I think of Archon of the Flesh and how they were so powerful they changed the perception of a whole fanbase On Twitter. And how fucked up it was that prudish antis doxxed them and tried to get them expelled from school and ostracized from their family over fetish art.

Omg, while we're on the topic of Destiny 2...I've never been in a fandom where so much of the toxic elements came from OUTSIDE. D2 came into existence when videogame criticism and journalism was craving failure and negativity content. Was D2 a deeply flawed game yeah? Was it fun, also yeah!
