The Economist coming out in favour of selecting embryos for IQ while dismissing the many extremely good arguments against this - from “it doesn’t work” to “promoting the idea that a flawed metric is a useful indicator of human worth is not going to go well” - is disappointing, to say the least

A few weeks ago I shared my view that prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket should be made illegal. Today it was announced that Kalshi is now taking bets on FDA drug approvals and clinical trial outcomes. These markets are metastasizing and nothing good can come of it.

a fantastic reminder that history always has an insight into the crises we see as unprecedented! Rapid uptake of new technologies is no guarantee of long-term impact.

I received notification of yet another death at an ICE facility, meaning 38 people have died in custody since Trump returned to office. ICE is failing to ensure the health and safety of the people it is responsible for. We need immediate oversight of this entire operation.

This (disturbing, fascinating) article highlights bizarre trends in performing race and gender in the TikTok era. It’s hard not to see these trends as the most recent iteration of early 1900s eugenics, particularly where they intersect with surging racism, transphobia, and misogyny.
