Excerpts from Michael Lewis on DOGE (Guardian article). 1. Gavin Kliger, white nationalist, refused to shake hands with the Black IRS staffer who briefed him on privacy issues. Or pay attention. Kliger now has a defense start-up valued at 1.4B thanks to DOGE. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Phyllis, who loved working for Kathleen and saw falling on hand grenades as part of her job, never told her how this one had felt. She knew Gavin had expressed enthusiasm for white nationalists, and he likely knew that she knew. She tried to break the ice by walking in with her hand extended; Gavin stared at it and declined to shake it, though he had shaken the hands of the white men who had offered them. “He was kind of cool towards me,” said Phyllis. Before she could even start the briefing, he said, You know, I’ve heard these rules before at other agencies. Yes, she said, but these rules are different, because no other agency is governed by this privacy law, and this law can get you thrown in jail very quickly. As she walked him through the basics – how you can’t use your personal phone for business, how if you happen to so much as glimpse a form 1040 with someone’s name on it you must avert your eyes – Gavin played on his phone. “He’s multitasking right in front of me, typing and texting,” said Phyllis. “It was, here’s a routine that I must endure.”

ORDERED that Defendants are enjoined from using, disbursing, or transferring funds appropriated to the Department of Homeland Security ("DHS") to develop, create, disseminate, place, distribute, publish, or air the challenged advertisements; and it is further
ORDERED that Defendants shall cancel or cause to be cancelled any slot, placement, reservation, or arrangement for the airing or dissemination of the challenged advertisements,
including those placements for the evening of October 11, 2026;
ORDERED that Defendants shall not enter into, renew, or expand any agreement authorizing the development, creation, dissemination, placement, or airing of the challenged
advertisements; and it is furtherORDERED that the foregoing instructions bind Defendants' officers, agents, employees, contractors, and anyone acting in concert with them. See Fed. R. Civ. P. 65(d)(2).
ORDERED that Defendants shall immediately provide a copy of this order to LMD,
under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 65(d)(2)(C), and that LMD, as a contractor that is in active concert and participation with Defendants, is enjoined from continuing to run or place the
challenged advertisements; and it is further
ORDERED that Defendants will file a status report within 24 hours of the entry of this temporary restraining order and Section 705 stay, confirming compliance with this Order; and it
is further
ORDERED that this Order shall remain in effect until 14 days from today, subject to an extension of this Court; and it is further
ORDERED that, in the Court's discretion, Plaintiffs shall not be required to post a bond.Case 1:26-cv-08882-JLR Document 41 Filed 10/11/26 Page 4 of 4
This Order shall be effective as of 6:45 p.m. on October 11, 2026 and the Clerk of Court
is respectfully requested to close the motion at Dkt. 25. The Court will reschedule the October
13, 2026 conference to discuss next steps in this matter.

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

This is an absolutely terrific piece of investigative journalism. The Inspector General system was created to create an internal watchdog to track abuses within the executive branch. Under Trump it has been completely neutered. Trump is firing IGs who do their job, and replacing them with loyalists.

Inspectors General were created as part a wave of post-Nixon reforms to improve accountability by placing internal watchdogs in the executive branch. Now, a former IG says: “All the adults have left the room. All these new IGs are lining up behind political leadership as if they’re lapdogs.”
A staffer at the Department of Education Office of Inspector General said: “nobody wants to speak up about anything.” After an acting IG raised concerns about a lack of co-operation with the Secretary of Education, a pattern of stonewalling that has become common across agencies, she was replaced. Another staffer said: “There is fear that writing something that is contrary to what the IG wants to put out there will lead to negative consequences…Preventing that is exactly why the IGs were created.”
