When a team starts building software, it’s common to find purely technical divisions like a user service, a database service, or an email service. But the domain has nothing to do with Java, Python, PostgreSQL, or Kafka. All of those are simply technological decisions.

Don't know who thought that sharing an URL with parameters, for such an important and commonly used web page such as the Next Train Departures, was a good idea. What will happen when that value changes? (Because it will) Why not use just a subdomain or a fixed path?

Today I will publish a special edition of my newsletter The Optimist Engineer, something personal… a fear I have. @suarezfdz86.bsky.social encouraged me to do this step forward; he told me many people will find it reflected in my words. You will read it here newsletter.optimistengineer.com

Some (more than I thought!) software engineers are coming to me saying: "Marcos, I’m scared about the AI, I think it will take over my job" I say: "No f*cking way" But you don’t need to trust me, trust more expert people who are living in tech for much more than you and I.

Over the last few months, I’ve written several articles about Staff Engineer, technical leadership, ownership, and breaking out of silos. I’ve now condensed all that practical advice into a one-page playbook you can actually use.

End-to-end ownership is non-negotiable Staff Engineers own projects from problem definition to delivery. You are the person people ask. You manage dependencies. You align priorities. Ownership means no hiding behind “that’s not my part”.
