Badenoch attacks Burnham as "a man who was happy to serve in Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet". A bit rich from someone who served in Liz Truss's actual cabinet.

What the Bayeux Tapestry is really about
Its 70 metres can be reduced to a single acronym: FAFO. For that’s what King Harold, the oath-breaker, did

I went to see the Bayeux Tapestry and was lucky enough to avoid the queues and the crowds on a press viewing. I tried to put aside a hundred preconceptions from history books, illustrated plates and internet pics, and to look at it afresh as work of sequential art. >

European leaders have been unable to explain why releasing oil reserves just before a risky winter with likely supply disruptions due to the Iran War will help their citizens. They should just be honest: they felt they had no choice but to surrender to 🇺🇸extortion.

Yet again, Europe has surrendered to Trump
Yesterday leaders caved to Trump’s demand that they release Europe’s oil reserves ahead of a risky winter, to lower US energy prices before the midterm election.

When it comes to ebooks I generally direct people to Kobo (rather than Amazon) but I'm not sure they've got a firm grasp of the term 'non-fiction'.
Three books that are very obviously works of fiction.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

The behaviour of the Trump administration in Europe has been summed up in one quote from a Wall Street Journal article. My take:
davekeating.substack.com
“We can do that to any country we want. We can do that here.”
Explosive revelations about Trump’s ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle in the Wall Street Journal show the extent of the White House’s mafia-like extortion racket in Europe.

#OnThisDay 1066 William the Conqueror set sail for England. It was only 48 hours after the Battle of Stamford Bridge, so he and his army embarked with no idea which opponent they would have to fight.

Both Normans and English were clearly aware of what was happening on the other side of the Channel throughout the year - news could get across in <24 hours. William therefore knew that HG had stood down his army c. 8 September, and would have learned soon afterwards he had marched north.

Ordreric Vitalis claimed that Tostig visited Wm before he went to Hardrada, but he was writing 60 years later. I think everyone knew that the Normans were preparing to invade, whereas the Norwegian invasion appears to have come as a surprise to Harold (and presumably William too).

He would have known that HH had arrived in Yorkshire earlier in the month and that HG had set out to confront him. It's possible that news of Fulford could have reached William at St Valery a week later.

'King of the English' (Rex Anglorum) is used by Æthelstan from 927 and continues to be used as a royal title until the early c13th. 'England' occurs in chronicles and poems from the late c10th.

Æthelstan styled himself "King of the English'. Engla-londe (and the Latin equivalent, Anglia) are first found at the end of the c10th, during the reign of Æthelred the Unready.
