Hereward leads out The Wakes commemorating the 958th anniversary of his return from exile in early September 1067, when he began a five year rebellion against the oppressive rule of King William I 'the Conqueror'. The moment serves to sustain the cultural folk memory of Hereward among his own folk.

In 2021 we decided we needed a Hereward flag, banner or standard, particularly for the living history re-enactments. Nothing in the sources gave any description of a flag, although a standard-bearer is mentioned. Charlie from Cantanware got in touch and we discussed possibilities.

Charles Kingsley's 'Hereward the Wake' (1866) transformed a medieval footnote into a Victorian icon. His historical novel not only catapulted Hereward to fame but set the standard for how his legend would be remembered. #HerewardTheWake #VictorianLiterature #CharlesKingsley

A near contemporary source for Hereward is Domesday Book (1086) where the entries for a Hereward in South Lincolnshire in 1066 are universally accepted as being the same Hereward cited in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 1071. Curiously Hereward is not named as the holder of a manor at Bourne Linc's.

The Anglo Saxon Chronicle ‘E’ version is the primary source for Hereward. The year 1071 reports on the fall of Ely to William the Conqueror, effectively ending 5 years of rebellion and that Hereward escaped ‘and all who would follow him; he bravely led them out.’ #Hereward

The Liber Eliensis (ca:1174) is another source from the Fen Monasteries eulogising Hereward. It includes Hereward's actions at Ely during the Norman Conquest & is possibly the earlier draft of the Gesta Herwardi. #LiberEliensis #Hereward #Ely #Fens #History #Education #Heritage

November 30th 1069 Abbot Brand of Peterborough died leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the dramatic events of the Norman Conquest and the legend of Hereward the Wake. The 12th C Gesta Herwardi claims Brand knighted Hereward at Peterborough & a 14th C chronicle claims he is Hereward's uncle.
This illustration by HC Selous imagines the poignant farewell between Hereward and his uncle, Prior Brand, as the young man is exiled. The sorrow of departure and the weight of destiny are beautifully captured here.

Ingulph's Chronicle of Crowland Abbey is another source for #Hereward from the Fenland monasteries with the claim Hereward was buried here alongside his wife Torfrida. The chronicle, purported to be written in the late 11th C is in fact a 14th/15th century forgery. #WakeHereward #HerewardTheWake

During the 12th C other monks from Fenland Monasteries wrote about Hereward. Where Richard of Ely wrote a eulogy, c:1160 Hugh Candidus records a damning indictment of an Outlaw who sacked the abbey, burned down Peterborough and was excommunicated by the church. Hero or Villain?

In the early 12th century a Benedictine monk known as Richard of Ely compiled an account of an Anglo-Saxon warrior called Hereward. Richard wrote of an exile who rose to become 'a famous knight among the more famous' and a hero to his folk upon his return amid his subsequent rebellion in the Fens..
