The first I recall was 1980 or so and there was a TV show where a family picks up a hitchhiker in the rain and he was wearing a yellow rain coat with the hood up and he got in the seat next to the driver and as they drove down the road he attacked the driver. It was creepy and haunted me for years.

Today I saw a yard sign for a dem candidate (local) and at the top there had been attached a sign that said “republican voting for...” Some might call this encouraging, but all I could think of was that this person couldn’t bear to be mistaken for a democrat by neighbors.

Except for the fact that the alternative was Oz. It’s not just “get in line with the party” it’s about voting for the better of two choices even if you don’t particularly like them. That’s it. Just like I don’t think Harris was the GOAT, I just think she was a better choice than Trump.

Polarization is a popular beltway narrative, because it lends itself to the current media format, style, and makeup. It’s the old “the medium is the message” chestnut. Sportiification is good TV, and you are seeing that writ large as the GOP literally tells its constituents to vote “for the team.”

Wrong increased tax assessments lead to increased taxes. Your tax burden is not tied directly to property value and that is my whole fucking point but you are arguing against some straw man where I’m claiming property taxes never change.

Tax assessments do change (usually upward) but they don’t change at the same rate as the market. It’s not an apt comparison to the volatility of the stock market.

Yes, it is assessed every few years, but the tax assessment is not equivalent to the assessed sale value. They’re different. Otherwise when housing prices went nuts in 2021 everyone’s property taxes would have quadrupled. Spoiler alert: they didn’t.

You don’t pay based on your property’s assessed value you pay based on a tax assessment, which is a different number. That’s why many homes have an assessed tax value of say 250k, even though the market value due to demand might drive it up to 600k or more. So not the same at all.
