I also read an argument (forget where) that it's signalling desire to be part of 'the gang' AND affluence - that kind of plastic surgery costs serious money (?! I know, I know), so it's a bit of conspicuous/competitive consumption. We can be very *dim* hairless murder apes, when we want.

This be the verse ("Larkin' about in the Fafocene")
Two poems side by side - The first is Philip Larkin's "This be the verse" The second is an update for the Fafocene.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

They fucked the Earth, your mum and dad
They didn’t mean to, but they did
They filled the air with carbon - bad!
And of other species they got rid

But they were fooled into the burn
By PR flaks with loads of cash
Who half the time did denial-gurn
And elsewise sold the techno-flash

Man hands on apocalypse to man
It billows like a toxic cloud
There’s absolutely no b-plan
Having kids should be disavowed

There's a point at which your "snark" (as per your bio) destroys the possibility of communication. We're at that point. I strongly suspect this is what you want, crave; the certainty of the echo-chamber. Speaks to a certain fragility, but "not my monkeys not my circus."

lthough this new imperialism calls itself realism, realism has rarely been so fantastical. It assumes that domination can substitute for adaptation, that exerting control over flows can override material limits.

What it really offers is delay, postponing the ecological bill by turning planetary crisis into geopolitical competition. The collective problem of survival is reframed as a contest over who will absorb the damage first. Borders become shock absorbers. Militaries become climate institutions of last resort.

Delay, however, is not durability. Every new pipeline, port, and base is an investment in a future that cannot arrive. Empire transforms stranded assets into protected assets, defended by law, debt, and violence. In doing so, it locks societies into pathways that narrow rather than expand their options.

The defence of the present becomes the foreclosure of the future.

This is the final confession embedded in the new imperialism. It admits that the existing order cannot survive without coercion, that its promises were built on borrowed carbon and borrowed time. Faced with this recognition, states choose not transformation but enforcement. They drill the future, fortify the present, and call it realism.

History is unlikely to be persuaded. Empires that mistake delay for strength rarely survive the crises they prolong.

Climate change will not be subdued by competition, nor growth resurrected by conquest. What lies ahead is not an imperial century, but a reckoning that will judge not who controlled the most territory, but who had the courage to imagine a world beyond expansion.

Nothing has to be banned. Nobody has to announce that philosophy, history, literature, music, anthropology, or theoretical physics are useless. Nobody even has to believe that they are. The machinery requires only a number, a threshold, and a consequence. thebattleground.substack.com/p/thinning-t...
The policy goes wrong in how it converts one legitimate question—Will this program leave its graduates economically secure?—into a proxy for a much larger one: What kinds of knowledge should a society make materially possible?

Although those questions overlap, they are not the same. Once they are treated as interchangeable, however, the consequences extend far beyond the programs that immediately fail the test.

Universities begin learning which kinds of knowledge are safest to produce. Students learn which forms of curiosity carry regulatory risk. Administrators learn to translate intellectual activity into categories legible to the labour market.

The distinction between education and vocational investment becomes harder to articulate because the institutions themselves have been reorganised around a metric that presumes the distinction in advance.

Perhaps this is the deepest sense in which the US Department of Education’s new policy represents an apparatus of capture.

Nothing has to be banned. Nobody has to announce that philosophy, history, literature, music, anthropology, or theoretical physics are useless. Nobody even has to believe that they are.

The machinery requires only a number, a threshold, and a consequence. The spreadsheet will handle the philosophy.

And because its judgments arrive wearing the neutral language of earnings data rather than the embarrassing costume of ideology, we are encouraged to forget what has actually happened.

Why batteries and renewable energy need stronger government action and fewer silly markets
As solar and wind grow around the world, more batteries are needed, and the most progress is happening with strong, direct government action to support their growth.

I always think of this quote, about "praktisch." From a blog I did years ago -https://marchudson.net/2022/02/09/constructive-as-a-codeword-for-i-dont-want-to-address-your-points-see-also-praktisch/
It reminds me of the word “praktisch” and how it was used in Germany between the wars. According to an incredibly brave anti-Nazi German, who parachuted behind the German lines in 1944 to gather intelligence and then get captured by advancing Allied troops, this is what praktisch actually means

“… the word praktisch had been a two-syllable club he’d been beaten with by fellow students and teachers and businessmen and clergy all through the nightmare years. “Stop being such a god-damned idealist! Be practical!” “Practical means I know right from wrong but I’m too fucking scared to do what’s right so I commit crimes or permit crimes and I say I’m only being practical. Practical means coward. Practical frequently means stupid. Someone is too goddamn dumb to realize the consequences of what he’s doing and he hides under practical. It also means corrupt: I know what I ought to do but I’m being paid to do something different so I call it practical. Practical is an umbrella for everything lousy people do.”

In addition to oil, the Strait of Hormuz carries critical communications infrastructure, including undersea Internet cables that link Europe to South Asia, which Tehran could sever by deploying combat divers, uncrewed underwater vehicles, or surface vessels that drag their anchors across the seabed.
