Discussing 50 years of Spanish democracy featuring @edinburghpir.bsky.social’s @oliverescobar.bsky.social! Really interesting themes around change and continuity

Made it to #ecprgc25! Beautiful location amongst great discussions in the @sgparliaments.bsky.social panels! Looking forward to catching up with the SG on Knowledge and Governance later too!

It’s been a while since I visited a new one… #lovinglegislatures
Man (me) on left in dark green shirt taking ridiculous selfie in front of bushes, a white fountain, trees and the Catalan Parliament building. Parliament building - arches at the bottom, balcony and tall windows in the middle, and two round windows towards the top. Building is reddish/sandstone in colour. Blue sky. Bronze statue of someone that looks a bit like Peter Pan, in a robe holding a shieldPlenary chamber of the Catalan parliament, with lots of red/wooden rows in the foreground, marble pillars and arches to the side, and a podium in the centre. Catalan and Spanish flags at the back of the hall. Two massive chandeliers provide lighting in the middle.

Really fascinating findings here from @jamesweinberg1.bsky.social about how prepared freshly politicians feel for their new jobs…

I made it! And straight into an excellent @psa-parliaments.bsky.social panel on parliamentary reform and public engagement! #psa25
Library of Birmingham on the right (a square, grey/golden pyramid type building), and a ferris wheel on the left. Tram tracks in foreground. Six panelists sat at a table with papers, laptops and water bottles, with slides on the right. Curtains in background. Five empty chairs in the foreground (rest of the room packed - can’t see that in the pic).

In true #psa25 tradition, I am finalising my presentation on the train down and have changed the title from that in the programme

Hello to all the new people on Bluesky! I usually post about academic research on parliaments, European politics (mostly the UK and a bit of Germany), or higher education. But as it’s Sunday, here is a picture of my 6-month puppy, Merlin, to get you started.
Pomeranian looking almost at the camera, with a fake Gameboy that’s actually a soft toy in front.

Yes I’ve got Excel open and I’m analysing footnotes in a parliamentary report BUT: my puppy is resting at my feet, the sun is shining, and I can see Edinburgh castle from my window as I’m coding. I got lucky today.
Laptop screen in the foreground with a plant on the left. Behind it, in the background, is a window with blue sky, trees, flats and the silhouette of Edinburgh castle.

Packed room to hear from @samfriedman.bsky.social and @aaronreeves.bsky.social about their new book “Born to Rule” - fascinating data on both the stability of elites and elite wealth, and the changing way elites are presenting themselves to emphasise greater “ordinariness”

Last night I got to see the Northern Lights from my flat window. Truly magical.
Green and red hue to the night sky which makes up the majority of the image, while block of flats and trees are towards the bottom of the image.

Strange headline given the distribution of chairs was allocated to Labour before the elections took place…
Newspaper headline in The Guardian that reads: “Near clean sweep for Labour MPs in parliament select committee elections”

His name is Merlin, a 15-week old Pomeranian! I will be posting a lot about him on here in the coming months 😉

This has been how I’ve felt every day since we got a puppy. Excited but no idea what I’m doing (despite reading four puppy guides and constantly on puppy Reddit pages).
Scene from Finding Nemo where a group of fish finally escape a fish tank and image shows them in the ocean, but trapped inside plastic bags and who now don’t know how to get out to be truly free.

So my summer involved getting a puppy, who has thrown my life into disarray (in a sort of good way). Meet Merlin. A political-scientist-in-training, I assure you.
