Ive known who I am since I was six, I chose to conform to my parents will all thru childhood & young adulthood. I kept being taught that people like me are damned. I tried quite earnestly to become someone else. I wanted so badly to be "normal" Turns out I'm still me, despite it all.

Marina lore: when i was 13 I mailed cash to #AdventureQuest HQ in an envelope. it was a very specific amount, there were bills and coins. 2 weeks later my AQ account got upgraded to X-Guardian I cant believe I was dumb enough to do this, it wasnt a scam, AND I actually got something super cool 🥰

Another FaB TCG set, another femme FaB character with no armpit hair. I want pit hair! I'm utterly fascinated by the consistent lack of body hair on femme characters. Women are hairy!! they have body hair!! its not gross or scary or ugly! If I played MtG I'd probably whine about that too 🤣

Hey #FaBTCG people are more important than paper 💖 paul-desilva.medium.com/why-we-sign-...

Why We Sign - Paul DeSilva

Jan 25, 2019

I was recently having a conversation with someone somewhat new to Old School and he was asking about how best to build an Old School community in his area and tips for running tournaments. At one point in our conversation, he asked “So what’s the deal with that whole signing cards thing?”

For the uninitiated, it’s become fairly commonplace, and almost expected, that when you attend an Old School tournament, you bring a card with you that goes into a community prize pool. The card’s value doesn’t necessarily matter; emphasis is put on playability. I’ve seen everything thrown in from a Revised Drudge Skeletons to an Unlimited Sol Ring. Everybody who enters contributes a card and everybody who enters signs every card that was contributed. At the end of the tournament, these cards get drafted from the winner on down the list. This ensures that everybody leaves with something by which to remember the tournament and ideally to jam in their decks. So, the short answer to the question above might be simply “A memento.”

That being said, there’s a longer answer that I touched on that day and that I’d like to expand upon here. Old School is a wonderful format that’s about nostalgia, history, community, and jank brews, but the format also has a boogie man and I’m not referring to The Deck. Card values have skyrocketed, buyouts are rampant, investors have entered the arena. Yes, the true boogie man of the Old School format is named MTGFinance.

As Old Schoolers, we can’t pretend that we’re not happy when cards we already own go up in “value” but on the whole, most of us are unhappy with the current trends driving prices upward. The futility of it all affords us little recourse aside from attempting to keep cards within the community and cut deals with people who are known within the circle.

With that in mind, what the signing of these cards represents is more than simply a memento: it’s a destruction of value. That Unlimited Sol Ring covered in scribbles by a bunch of random, tipsy dudes just became a $0 card. It’s been stripped of any connection it once had to buylists, MTGStocks, and eBay sold. It has been irrevocably reduced to its most pure form, that of functionality and playability.

The action itself is important, but the optics are even more so. When outsiders see pictures from Old School tournaments showing tables of format staples absolutely obliterated with sharpie, it sends a message that we stand in opposition of Magic as an investment vehicle. It encapsulates perfectly the Old School ethos, that cards are meant to be played with, that experiences are more valuable than value, that people are more important than paper.

Some of my most coveted cards are the ones in my collection covered in illegible scrawlings. There have been times someone looking through my binder has seen one of them and realized their signature was on it too, that we had been at the same event without even realizing it. The sense of connection this brings to those around you in the community is unparalleled.

The Old Schooler I said all this to has since run his first tournament and sure enough, plenty of value was destroyed that day. And while first timers who played that event may not have arrived at the conclusions I have here, I know that they will go home with something they will covet, and in time they will come to wonder why they regard their scribbled up Revised Drudge Skeletons as the crowning jewel of their collection.

And that is why we sign.

-Sister Paul

Minnesota Department of Corrections Statement on Minneapolis Shooting and Federal Claims (excerpt) "The inaccurate assertions of these high-level ICE officials are untrue, reckless, and contrary to longstanding practice." mn.gov/doc/about/ne... #Minneapolis #AltText

Minnesota Department of Corrections Statement on Minneapolis Shooting and Federal Claims

January 24, 2026

The Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Alex Pretti, who was shot and killed by federal agents this morning in Minneapolis. The loss of life is tragic, and Minnesotans deserve transparency, accountability, and facts.

In the hours following the shooting, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino held a press conference asserting that the operation was targeting an individual named Jose Huerta-Chuma and characterized him as having a significant criminal history. Because federal statements have repeatedly included inaccurate information about Minnesota custody and criminal records, the DOC reviewed available records to determine whether the individual referenced had any connection to Minnesota state prison custody.

Based on DOC records and publicly available Minnesota court data:

The individual identified by federal officials has never been in Minnesota DOC custody.
DOC and court records show no felony commitments associated with this
Public Minnesota court records reflect only misdemeanor-level traffic offenses from more than a decade ago.
The individual is not currently under DOC supervision.
DOC records further indicate that an individual by this name was previously held in federal immigration custody in a local Minnesota jail in 2018, during President Trump’s first administration. Any decisions regarding release from federal custody at that time would have been made by federal authorities. DOC has no information explaining why this individual was released.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem publicly stated that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) investigators would not be allowed to investigate the shooting because the state “refuses to cooperate with ICE.” That statement is incorrect. Minnesota DOC does cooperate with ICE to facilitate custody transfers for individuals subject to federal detainers. That cooperation was publicly confirmed on January 22 by Marcos Charles, Acting Executive Associate Director of ICE, during a federal press conference, and again by Vice President J.D. Vance during his remarks the same day. The inaccurate assertions of these high-level ICE officials are untrue, reckless, and contrary to longstanding practice.

To address ongoing misinformation by DHS, Minnesota DOC has launched a dedicated web page to provide accurate, verified information regarding DOC’s cooperation with ICE. This resource was created in response to repeated false or misleading claims by DHS about DOC custody, detainers, and cooperation.

The new web page serves as a central hub for information, including:

Facts showing a verified point-in-time count of non-citizens in state custody.
Press Releases providing accurate information about DHS’s “worst of the worst” lists.
Videos including Thursday’s press conference and custody transfer footage that refutes DHS’s assertions of a lack of coordination between DOC and ICE.
To access this new resource: Combatting DHS Misinformation or https://mn.gov/doc/about/news/combatting-dhs-misinformation/

DOC will continue to review facts carefully, correct the record when necessary, and share accurate, verifiable information with the media and the public.
