I think people should listen to what the administration trying to bring back spectacle lynchings, race riots, and middle passage-esque deportation voyages are trying to tell you about themselves. bsky.app/profile/bren...

The soldier who founded a white nationalist group and tried to spy for another country can now be named as Private Jack Captein. Last year, I recounted his story. Newsroom has also published a video of the aftermath of the police/NZDF raid on Captein's quarters. newsroom.co.nz/2025/08/25/t...

Hipkins edges Luxon on relatability in first 2026 election leaders' debate
Analysis: Christopher Luxon kept his foot well clear of his mouth and Chris Hipkins leashed his attack dog temptations, but neither excelled in the debate.

I think her reaction was to Chippy's rejoinder, which the mics didn't quite grab. When Luxon was saying he wouldn't work with any party that wants to raise taxes, Hipkins said something to the effect of, "But you'll work with racists".

We don't generally say the Japanese military committed genocide in WWII but they definitely committed constant egregious war crimes and crimes against humanity.

As someone who was on that hill at a certain stage, there is a reasoning behind it (even if I don't think it holds up in this scenario). Genocide is a specific thing, not just a word for very bad or very egregious crimes against humanity/war crimes.

US President Teddy Roosevelt famously advised, “Speak softly and carry a big stick”. The problem for Gerry Brownlee, who wrapped up his first and potentially final term as Speaker this week, is he tended to forget the part about the stick. newsroom.co.nz/2026/09/24/g...

The problem is receiving *commercial* journalism for free. There has always been free public media in NZ. You'd have to do some pretty significant contortions to take my argument (in its context) and turn it into "make RNZ for-profit".

This Govt has sat in urgency for 67 days – longer than any other since at least 2008. Around one in four sitting days this Parliament have been in urgency. Parties have agreed to change Parliament’s rules for next term to implement some minor checks on urgency. newsroom.co.nz/2026/09/25/m...

Having access to free news online for a couple of decades has poisoned peoples' minds into thinking it always has been free and always should be. And over the same time, the number of journalists in NZ fell by three quarters.

The dissemination of public interest media content plays out similarly. eg, Stuff and 1News (both free to access) have now published the video that started this all off and RNZ and Stuff are running follow-up stories.

I think it's a model that makes sense for us as a small outlet, to give potential subscribers a look at what they get by subscribing. But the "soft paywall" model also means we probably have fewer subs (imo), because why subscribe if you can just wait a few days and read it anyways?

It is selective: Things people will pay for are hidden behind paywalls. Things people won't pay for are available without a paywall.

The coalition is ahead of the Opposition in the polls (when excluding Opportunity). Which would indicate National MPs still have a slight generic advantage in two way electorate races.

Prime Ministers don't take on large additional portfolios. They usually are Minister of National Security and Intelligence and sometimes have a minor additional portfolio (child poverty reduction for Ardern, tourism for Key).
