6/ Near the end, the whole room sang Kol HaOlam Kulo. The whole world is a very narrow bridge, and the main thing is not to be afraid at all. We'd shown ID and opened our bags to get in. Then we sang it like we meant it.

4/ One chapter of the night was called The Longing for Peace. The songs this community chose for it: I Was Born for Peace, and We Don't Need Anything More Than This. Remember that next time someone tells you what we want.

3/ Beside a card for Chen Ben-Avi, 22, sat a plate of her favorite: stuffed grape leaves. Eldest of four, raised in Mivtahim near the Gaza border. Known for her laugh and for bringing people together. Murdered at the Nova festival. Nobody in that room was a number.

2/ Three years ago, Hamas terrorists went house to house through southern Israel. One called his parents from a kibbutz to brag that he'd killed ten Jews with his own hands. They came to kill Jews. They killed anyone in the way.

🧵 1/ This came with my registration for an October 7 memorial tonight in Fairfax, VA. Bring photo ID. Security on site. Every bag inspected. All of it so we can sit in an auditorium and listen to songs for the dead. This is what it takes to mourn as a Jew in America now.

Game 4 in Cleveland with the boys. Sweep. 130-93. Brunson MVP. Clyde next to him. First time witnessing this live. Got to share it with my sons. Worth every dollar. Dreamed of this since the Starks Dunk hung over my bed as a kid. Four more wins. 🟠🔵

JAHM feels heavier this year. Our community is tired. We’re grieving. We’re watching antisemitism show up in places we never thought we’d see it. Grateful to have a Governor who sees it too, and who’s willing to say so plainly. Jewish Virginians are safer when our leaders refuse to look away.

🧵 1/ There's a Jewish teaching on my mind this week. Lo tirah. Don't look away. A Texas Democrat running for Congress is openly talking about putting Jews in camps. Of course, Monique Alcalá was one of the first voices calling on the TDP to disavow her. That's exactly who she is.

Just walked out of a meeting with @mcclellan.house.gov on the Jewish American Security Act. She didn’t watch the clock. She asked real questions. She’d done her homework. I walked in hopeful. I walked out grateful. She gets it. @jfederations.bsky.social @jcrcgw.bsky.social

Honored to spend time with Senator @senwarner.bsky.social today. We walked through the Jewish American Security Act, full NSGP funding, and the personnel cap reform. He has been a partner for Virginia’s Jewish community for years. Grateful for his time and attention. Our safety is not optional.

Thank you to @repvindman.bsky.social for listening this morning. Two weeks ago, someone painted swastikas at Stafford High School. Walls don’t write themselves. He learned that on a phone. The Jewish American Security Act would make the platforms show their work. @jfederations.bsky.social

On Capitol Hill this morning with the Virginia delegation at the Jewish Federations fly-in. Two percent of the country. Seventy percent of the religiously motivated FBI hate crime targets. The threat is not a statistic. It's a forecast. Our safety is not optional. Our security is not negotiable.

"We have taught a generation about Jewish death and forgotten to teach them about Jewish life." From a piece I published last night on what Holocaust education isn't doing, and what Virginia law already requires us to add. 🔗 to article in comments.

A congressman wants a Virginia state senator denaturalized and deported over a bill he sponsored. Jews know this move. Your citizenship is conditional on the right opinions. Pointed at one community today. Another tomorrow. Name it.

Three Stafford County Supervisors have now publicly addressed the antisemitic graffiti at Stafford HS: Maya Guy, Darrell English, Crystal Vanuch. The School Board, as a body and as individuals, has said nothing. Showing up shouldn’t be remarkable. It’s still rare enough to be worth naming. 🙏

Stafford Supervisor Maya Guy is the only sitting BOS member to publicly address the antisemitic graffiti at Stafford HS. She named it. She named Jewish American Heritage Month. She told Jewish students they are seen. Showing up shouldn't be remarkable. Right now, it is. Thank you, Supervisor Guy.

Abe Foxman is gone. Three years ago at a Jewish American Heritage Month event, I got to meet him. A hidden child of the Shoah who spent six decades refusing to look away from antisemitism. Left, right, or center. The line he held is ours to hold now. זיכרונו לברכה

Mark Moran's response to "You taking jew money?" was "No." Not "that's antisemitic." Just "No." Then he said he won't take "Arab money" either. Jewish and Arab Americans aren't Americans to him. Just foreign interests. He named his campaign car "The Transparency Machine." On this, he's delivered.

Yesterday, Mark Moran announced his Virginia Senate campaign as an independent. Yesterday, an account called Weimerica asked him if he was taking "jew money." Same day. He said, "No." Not "that's antisemitic." Not "get lost." Just "No." Weimerica got the candidate it wanted.

You can oppose this war without a white nationalist finishing your sentences. Virginia Delegate Sam Rasoul chose not to. He went with the version about Jewish power pulling strings behind the scenes that’s been used to target Jews for centuries. He keeps finding what he’s looking for.

Almost a year to the day, I was in NY with my friend Arsen. Today, he’s alive by luck alone. A bullet grazed his head at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney. His family was there. This isn’t abstract. Violence doesn’t come out of nowhere. Silence doesn’t keep the peace. It decides who gets hurt.

Virginia’s JCRCs are sounding the alarm, and we should listen. Leaders, especially those shaping our schools, have a responsibility to lower the temperature, not fuel hate. Our Commonwealth deserves better.

2/ Tal, JCFR’s community shlicha, spoke. And Alex Perelman got up and told us about his grandfather Mendel — what he survived, what he carried for the rest of his life. Trauma that doesn’t heal, just gets carried forward. That’s what intergenerational memory looks like in real time.

I just finished Eli Sharabi’s “Hostage” and I can’t stop thinking about it. A husband and father, dragged from his home. His family killed. 491 days starving in tunnels. Yet he became a protector to younger captives, finding light in total darkness. Read this book. Please.

Confronted with facts, Virginia Del. Sam Rasoul didn’t correct himself. He said “Paid by Israel.” It’s a textbook case of twisting evidence to keep the same villain. Hard to believe this is the person setting standards for truth in Virginia classrooms. (thread ⬇️)

The shofar calls us to wake up, bread in water calls us to let go. For thousands of years, Jews have chosen renewal in the darkest times. With antisemitism rising, choosing to celebrate feels like victory. Hope is a choice. We’re choosing it. L’shanah tovah.
