What a gripping, heart wrenching novel from Charlotte McConaghy. Glad I decided to lug it with me over to Italy. Unforgettable. Brilliant.

Oh my gosh, what a book. When I first started reading Christopher Bollen's HAVOC, I thought someone foisted this Bertie-Wooster-like delight onto me as a thriller. But then it became Jeeves meets American Psycho, and I truly became smitten. I absolutely LOVE this deliciously dark, dark book.

Got more grief and complaints in 14 novels from one dog intentionally hit by a car than all the abuse and murder inflicted on people. I don’t get it either.

Last week I read a brand-new book that was so awful I was afraid I wouldn't read again. Then I picked up THE NIGHT GUEST by Hidur Knútsdóttir and it saved me. An absolute ace of a thriller/horror like nothing else out there. @hildur.bsky.social

I love her so much. Although I’ll be leaving for Europe when it comes out, it’s one hardback book I’d be willing to heft along for the ride.

Over the years I have been gifted some pretty incredible fan art. This is one of my favorites. Mad praise for whoever created this.

I love my cat so much. But to be honest, nobody else does; she’s such a prick, so I totally get it. This is the most important work pets can do for our souls.

My family is from Trieste. I was the first one born in the States, and grew up with a non-English-speaking mother, who came here after/because of 1954. I still go back there for several months every year, and also have relatives who emigrated to Brazil. I will get that other book. Nice to meet you!

Last month, they sent me an email saying they had decided to reimburse me, but they wanted me to email them my bank account routing number and account number. Not sketchy at all, right? I told them to just put a fucking check in an envelope, the USPS knows how to get things delivered.

A very small victory: In the past 18 months, Lufthansa has lost my luggage on two out of two flights. Dealing with them was utterly exhausting; like their strategy is totally based on getting people to give up. My foul mouth and I have finally prevailed. Go to hell, Lufthansa. Don’t bring luggage.

I’m so happy to welcome all the new people here. I will always be grateful to the person (whom I’m a ridiculous fanboy of) who sent me an invite code way back when. JSYK. I have undocumented friends. I will go to the streets for them. I post pictures and stuff about books and music. And my mean cat.

This is a baby Blainville's Horned Lizard, a threatened species that has a few nesting areas in the hills around my home. When they hatch (this photo was 2 days ago), they come out by the dozens. Trying to keep them safe for the future.

I’m a big fan of Helen Oyeyemi. Nobody (NOBODY!!!) writes like she does. This book is absolutely perfect. Pure joy, immersive, funny as all hell. PARASOL AGAINST THE AXE by Helen Oyeyemi. My favorite book of 2024 so far, and my favorite Oyeyemi novel. *chef’s kiss*

Same with my wife and me--small rural community; one school K-8; no grocery stores. Our home is paid off now and I can't imagine how impossible housing is for young people in America. Also, the entire idea of a "starter home" is obscene. We bought our home to live in, not to dump and move up from.

This is the first photo I took in 2024, a bobcat who lives in the hills behind my house. I know exactly where she lives, but she always disappears when I try to get a picture. Today I mesmerized her by telling her she's pretty in my Ultra-High-Pitched-Kitty-Voice™ and she was momentarily intoxicated

I agree we need to give full support to Ukraine. I also believe Kinzinger is a senselessly cruel hypocrite when it comes to his views on US aid to Israel and how that aid is used. He has expressed several times a big fat “oh well” to the war crimes being inflicted on the innocent people of Gaza.
000
Andrew Smith @marburyjack.bsky.social · 29/12/2023
Kinzinger is part of the “turn Gaza into a parking lot” crew, and because of that I would look for other former statesmen for policy takes on pretty much anything.
000
Andrew Smith @marburyjack.bsky.social · 29/12/2023
Oh, I totally support assisting Ukraine. Russia must be stopped. It’s Kinziger’s hypocritical blind support of the massacre in Gaza that nullifies anything he has to say about US defense expenditures for me.

Andrew Smith @marburyjack.bsky.social · 29/12/2023
As a war guy, Kinzinger delights in seeing grand-scale destruction. More weapons, bigger bombs. He may have an honorable take on the Constitution and rule of law here, but he's a bloodthirsty grunt when it comes to squandering the lives of innocent civilians.

This is a beautiful little book. Originally called Lo Stralisco; one of the most popular children's books in Italy. There aren't strict kids' categories in Italy, but this is a lovely story for all ages; about a painter hired to decorate the interior walls of a sick child's room. GLOWRUSHES.
The book cover for GLOWRUSHES, by Roberto Piumini. It shows a blue, nighttime background with colorfully illuminated flowering plants in the foreground.
