i'm very happy but also WHY WONT THIS STORY END

70,000. Still a little more drafting to do to wrap up the final chapter(s), but this month's goal has been achieved! I never posted exactly what the word count was at the start of the month, but I'm pretty sure it was like 37k or 38k. Definitely a significant effort. Excited to tie things up soon!

I would, in fact, PREFER to write books without the need to work for my own finances lol

But he could have been burned out by the industry, gotten sick of working in the otaku media space, etc. It's just that the phrase "retired as a novelist" strikes me as odd since I think I often think of people in creative professions as doing them for life.

It's kind of easy to look at his works and, if you think of them as disposable nonsense, think ungenerously something like, "Guess he was never into making art in the first place; it was just a job." But that is perhaps somewhat cynical.

marble〇 @marblemystar.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Reading this article has provoked quite the interesting reaction in me. The author's retiring not because of burnout because he's financially independent enough to retire early. Being an LN author is a real grind, but I wonder if he's going to continue writing or going to give it up entirely.

60,000 (or 61,000, to be precise) and fully back on track for 1,000 words a day to take us to the end of the story. Assuming, of course, that 9,000 words is all that's need to wrap things up, which isn't a bet I'd make against myself. Still, we remain very much on track. The end is in sight!

50,000. That's +15,000 (approximately) since the start of the month with a several day break; and less than 1000 words off the pace to complete the draft by the end of the month. Tsundere project continues apace!

Day 1: Not so scary after all. Turns out that spending two months refining two character voices and plot gives you a pretty good platform for continuing on a story!

The first half of the tsundere project is now re-written. For the first time in what feels like forever, it's time to draft new stuff. Scary!

I am, quite frankly, in awe of the character-full brevity and wit (and I despair at my own long-winded writerly bravado). In another world this is the opening to a hugely acclaimed memoir, I am quite sure.

Sometimes you find a spot of terrific writing is the most unexpected place, like a 12-year-old blog post written by a tea-loving presumed retiree from Wisconsin. I have not been able to stop thinking about this delightful piece since I read it earlier today. deathbytea.blogspot.com/2014/08/firs...

In unrelated news, I've been on a short vacation the last couple days, going to museums and so, and I feel like I've suddenly understood the value of small notebooks. Typing stuff into the phone notes app is just not the right fit.

The art I commissioned for the cover image for the short story I'm putting out this month is so good that I'm feeling guilty about not having given the story more editing attention... I feel like I have a responsibility to make the story even better having seen the art WIP.

So, what's next? First, later this month I'll have a new short story coming out for a different Honeyfeed contest. And, meanwhile, I'll be thrashing away at the tsundere project with an eye toward having a first draft done in another month or two.

marble〇 @marblemystar.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Of course you'd rather win than not, but managing to become a finalist in the first two writing contests I've entered is either outrageous good luck or a sign that I'm doing something right. Hopefully more the latter than the former. 😅

Sad to report that 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘔𝘺 𝘍𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘔𝘦! did not manage to win the MAL x Honeyfeed NOVELOUS Worlds contest. Without being too self-deprecating, this really was not a shock. 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 was a 3-month side project that surprised me with its success.

A friend recently sent me this quote from Vladamir Nabokov to one of his editors. Have to confess, although I won't claim to be as good a writer as Nabokov, as a long-sentence enjoyer, this resonated. 😅 (To Katharine A. White, 10th November 1947; V. N., Selected Letters 1940-1977, p. 77.)
Quote from Vladamir Nabokov: "I shall be very grateful to you if you help me to weed out bad grammar but I do not think I would like my longish sentences clipped too close, or those drawbridges lowered which I have taken such pains to lift. In other words, I would like to discriminate between awkward construction (which is bad) and a certain special - how shall I put it - sinuosity, which is my own and which only at first glance may seem awkward or obscure. Why not have the reader re-read a sentence now and then? It won't hurt him."

Today was a 3500 word re-write day. A shame that an out-of-town work trip that will inevitably wreck my flow is bearing down on me later this week. 😔

The August issue of Clarkesworld features cover art by Thomas Brissot. A young woman flanked by two robots with large swords aimed straight down appear to be conversing with a tall water bird on the edge of a leafy area. The title is "A Visit To The Oracle" and the bird's beak is open as if speaking. The background fades shows a palace of sorts behind the bird but only whiteness behind the other figures.

Maybe I'm the one who's wrong for this, but amateur authors switching between tenses willy-nilly—either from chapter to chapter or, worse, paragraph to paragraph—is one of the things that I just can't tolerate.
