Italy is providing a free lesson to the UK about how NOT to go about changing electoral law. Firstly, it has changed them every few years according to the needs of the governing majority of the day. Second, the workings of electoral laws should be fairly easy to grasp for voters..good luck with that

Not the main story of this piece www.ft.com/content/9b25..., but: When center-right copies far-right's policies (migration) => no electoral gains; but when far-right copies center-right economic policies (which the electorate supposedly dislikes) they don't book any losses... Go figure

Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
You could just briefly point out that Mona Keijzer's political plans are the equivalent of AI slop: copied and based on what seems to be most probable electoral success formula from the past 2+ years. Little bit of NSC (sociaal conservatief) plus a little bit MAGA (Project 2029).

The tech overlords want AI to replace human relations. German conservative politicians are on board: President of the Bundestag posts AI slop picturing back-to-school kids, and using AI slop music. "Don't ask - just grab" as a political motto.

but to create a debt market. Point is that what is presented here so confidently by the economists as somehow hard facts about sovereign debt, debt markets and safe assets in the EU doesn't seem to fly elsewhere.

Economist columnist are always so fond of Singapore. Well, why not bring up Singapore as an example here? Look at Singapore's debt to gdp and the reasons for it: exactly, to create a debt market. I'm not defending this. after all, sovereign debt in singapore is issued not to finance social spending

Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
Quote from an AM at Pimco. Market actors don't care about too much debt, but, if anything, about too little. Sure, also about ability to service it - but not about some specific debt to gdp ratio.

Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
The answer is already given in that piece by the people that were interviewed: "Nor is EU debt permanent; it is supposed to be repaid and not rolled over. That is one reason why it is omitted from sovereign-bond indices [...] “You also need compensation for the lower liquidity" ".

Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
Last but not least: the entire premise of this short piece falls apart already with the title: safe assets and low debt don't go together.

In the run up to the Eurozone crisis, Spain had lower debt to gdp than Germany. This is just a poor attempt to retrofit the old morality tales about frugals vs profligates. Also: why focus on the numerator (debt) instead of denominator (GDP)? Ireland has overinflated GDP...

When the objective was to create a common repo market in government bonds, treating all sovereign debt the same (haircut), was not a leap of faith. That was *creating* a sovereign debt market.

would undermine the supposed "stability" and credibility in stablecoins (i.e. being able to redeem them on demand).

Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Likewise, unless SC issuers buy directly gov bonds from central banks or treasuries, settlement balances (reserves) will not decrease in the system. And even if they would do so, why would they seek to decrease liquidity in the system this way? After all, decreasing liquidity in the system
100
Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Granted, a concentration of deposits could affect bank funding (e.g. SC issuers don't hold retailers deposits and buy gov bonds from pension funds), but in which way remains a question: will shift to wholesale funding for banks make it easier to run profitable business or not?
100
Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
What happens is that deposits will be more concentrated, alright. But that's an interpretation/frame a crypto friendly news website wouldnt want to entertain I suppose (I leave out the possibilities that commercial banks could themselves start issuing stablecoins)
100
Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
...that are necessarily on a bank account. They might use these funds to buy government bonds or other highly liquid assets. So I don't see how demand for SC decreases demand for deposits in aggregate for the banking system as a whole.
100
Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
This is nonsense: deposits are liabilities of banks, and when customers shift to stablecoins the deposits are just transferred to other banks (where stablecoin issuers are clients). After all, if stablecoin issuers are in the monetary union area they issue stablecoins in return for deposits..

...the "Turkey deal", this was to underline the transactional and morally and legally questionable and thus unstable nature of the agreement. So EU organs like the COM or Council are very much aware of the connotations of that term.

Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
But given that EU institutions are very careful in the choice of their language, I would be surprised if they didn't put some thought into it. Alternatively, they called it deals because trump calls it this way. But even then: when the press rechristened the EU-Turkey Statement of Cooperation...

Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
I have no proof as to whether this language (calling everything they do with the US "deals") matters to the EU institutions - would be an interesting project to investigate.
100
Marat Markert @maratmarkert.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
This will probably not cause shock and awe on the EU's side. Not b/c this TACO strategy is predictable and wearing thin; but because by accepting Trumps language (calling everything "deals" instead of treaties or agreements) the expectation that he will rescind is already baked in.
