Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Yup. He was dead serious. He also started complaining about all the bicycles that "go over the speed limit". He got very confused when I told him that bicycles don't have a speed limit. 4510
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 04/10/2026If you want to exprience our "terrible bicycle problem" yourself, here's a video I recorded a few years ago of me biking through the area: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZUH... (Said tram stop is roughly at the start of the video.) 3802
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 04/10/2026He was really concerned to see so many bicycles everywhere. To his American brain, bicyclists were a terrible thing. He said he almost got hit by a bicyclist multiple times today. (Presumably by walking in the middle of the bicycle road. I don't know how else you manage to do that.) 🙃 71355
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 04/10/2026At the tram stop just now, right next to some of the best bicycle infrastructure you'll ever see, an American tourist came to me to ask me if the Dutch government was doing anything about "this terrible bicycle problem" we have in the Netherlands. 🙃 3032232

Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 29/09/2026For a while my plan was actually to fully step down from my involvement in Rust at the end of the Rust All Hands this year, but I'm glad I didn't do that. I'm really happy I found something that feels energizing again rather than draining. Very curious to see where things will be in a year from now. 3430
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Exactly one year ago I stepped down from my main responsibilities in the Rust project, because of burnout. Today, a year later, I employ about a dozen full-time Rust maintainers through Hexcat+RustNL. I'm not doing much technical work anymore, but this people stuff is also pretty fun and motivating. 3802

Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Of course, maintenance involves many more things than producing and reviewing pull requests. Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 27/08/2026If we weigh the pull requests by size (lines changed, capped at 2k) or by number of comments (on the GitHub thread), we get even higher numbers: roughly 40%. 1160

Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026In other words, if I had said €90k venue rent and €90k catering, would that have been better? It's a bit arbitrary where we draw the line. We just categorize all the things related to the restaurant as 'catering', but maybe that doesn't give the most accurate picture. 150
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026€ 75 per person per day for warm lunch with multiple options and drinks+snacks throughout the day is quite decent at a prime location like this. The restaurant gives us exclusive access, so also serves as the break area and 'hallway track'. So part of this catering budget is just more venue rent. 130
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026That isn't just the food and drinks; that amount also covers renting out the 1000-person capacity restaurant with enough personel to serve lunch for 850 people all at once. I think the 'hallway track' is by far the most important part of a conference, so I find it important we invest in that. 1170
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Note that many other conferences also spend a lot of money on their website, customer support, event coordination, logistics, social media, recruiting sponsors, etc. We are able to do much of that ourselves, unpaid, which is a privilege that many other event organizers simply don't have. 9/9 1440
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Setting the ticket prices is very tricky, because you have to set them a year in advance, before any sponsors sign up. We only find out after the event if we ran at a loss or profit. This year, we made a very small profit, which we'll spend on our Rust Maintainers Team: rustnl.org/maintainers/ 8/9 1460
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Those student tickets are sold at a significant loss, but it's very important to us to not just run this conference for those with a well paid job. 7/9 1440
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Those are roughly 250 corporate tickets (~410 euro after tax), 300 individual tickets (~190 euro after tax), and 100 student tickets (~30 euro after tax). Accounting for the various discounts (early bird, discount codes, etc.) and overhead, this leaves us with roughly 140k. 6/9 1360
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026We are currently the biggest Rust conference with 850+ attendees. We give free tickets to all the speakers and volunteers, which is almost a hundred people total. The sponsor packages also include a total of roughly 100 tickets. That leaves ~650 sold tickets. 5/9 1390
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026This adds up to roughly € 280k for just the two conference days. (The total for all of RustWeek is ~€ 400k.) The money we get from sponsors covers roughly half of the costs. The other half has to be covered by tickets. 4/9 1410
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026Venue rent: € ~50k Lunch, snacks, drinks, catering services: € ~130k A/V services: € ~30k Stuff we set up at the venue: € ~20k Travel compenstation for speakers: € ~10k External services: € ~25k (accounting, registration & payment, event management, insurance, etc.) Miscelaneous: € ~15k 3/9 3510
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026RustWeek has many subevents (conference, hackathon, unconference, workshops, Rust All Hands, etc.), but I've tried to extract just the two day conference part of RustWeek 2026: 2/9 1330
Mara Bos @mara.bsky.social · 11/08/2026I was asked recently about the cost of running a #rustlang conference and why the ticket prices are what they are. We figured we can just publicly share the numbers for RustWeek, in the name of #transparency. :) 1/9 216637
