Overall, this research reveals a complex story of asymmetric polarization: states moving farther and farther apart from each other, but at varying speeds and scales.

By examining these changes, the report demonstrates how 2020 marked the beginning of a new era of anti-LGBTQ politics, characterized by speed, breadth, extremism, and, perhaps more so than anything else, its near-laser focus on transgender people.

Since 2020, political attacks on LGBTQ and especially transgender people have dramatically escalated. Until now, these attacks have unfolded in legislatures, government agencies, and executive offices. But in 2026, this fight is being put to voters directly. Read more below. ⬇️ 🧵

Since 2020, political attacks on transgender people have rapidly escalated—specifically, anti-transgender legislation. In response, MAP and @transequality.bsky.social have partnered on a multi-part series to show how state policies shape the lives and experiences of transgender and nonbinary people.

At the beginning of 2021, 10 states were in the two lowest categories, 25 in the Fair category, and 15 states and D.C. in the two highest categories. By 2026, the total of Low or Negative states increased from 10 to 18. The total of Medium and High states also grew, from 15 to 20 states and D.C.

MAP’s analysis points to a clear pattern: state election policy has not moved in a single national direction over the past five years. Instead, states are moving farther apart with the strongest policy environments showing further improvement and the weakest experiencing further decline.

This week marked the annual observance of #InternationalDragDay. An art form dating back centuries, drag is a vital part of LGBTQ culture and history. 2023 brought a resurgence of efforts to limit free speech and expression in the form of drag performances, and our Equality Map tracks these laws.

Today’s #SCOTUS decision is wrong and deeply hurtful. And while the decision allows existing state-level bans on trans youth participation in sports to stand, it does not affect states that have adopted inclusive policies, nor does it require any state to discriminate against transgender youth.

A democracy that excludes LGBTQIA+ people from equal participation is incomplete. LGBTQIA+ people have always been at the heart of movements for freedom—organizing, resisting, and caring for one another. Today, MAP recognizes #IDAHOBIT2026: a moment of solidarity and resistance for our community.
