When Starbucks first entered China, its appeal lay in its foreignness, offering access to an imagined Western way of life. More than 2 decades later, in Urumqi, Starbucks is appreciated for the opposite reason: how local it is, selling an imagined Xinjiang experience back to Chinese consumers.

Starbucks Goes Xinjiang, Kardashians in China & Sucker Souvenirs
Starbucks rebrands as “Star-Bazaar” in Urumqi—what does it say about shifting perceptions of Western brands in China? Also: a cheating sports influencer and the souvenirs that became most hated.

If you’re interested in reading more about WHY Niu Lai has struck such a chord, my latest piece explores five reasons why this particular movie is resonating with Chinese millennials and Gen Z. Find it here: www.whatsonweibo.com/the-power-of...

The Power of Ugly: Why Niu Lai Became China’s Unlikeliest Box-Office Hit
How the two-person animated film Niu Lai turned its “ugly” visuals, dreamcore nostalgia, and remarkable cinema journey into a nationwide participatory meme.

Others are simply moved by the story behind the film: no AI, no big budget—just a mother-and-son team of first-time animators pursuing their dream and bringing Niu Lai to life frame by frame on secondhand computers over half a decade.

It's all fun and nonsense, but there is also deeper meaning to Niu Lai. Some people genuinely feel there's a certain original, artistic aesthetic to the film that attracts and moves them.

Official accounts have also used Niu Lai to draw attention to their public service announcements, fire hazard warnings, or, like in this example, traffic safety rules. (This video is by Hainan Police)

A personal favorite of mine is this clip by Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Heritage Museum, using the Niu Lai trend to spotlight their ancient ox & waterbuffalo bronzeware, tying Chinese digital culture and cultural heritage together. Well done by the marketing department.

The most unexpected one for me was that even companies outside of China started hopping on the hype - these are some Chinamaxxing dynamics. The Dutch National Railways launched a TikTok campaign inspired by Niu Lai, which has since made its way back to Chinese social media as a global meme moment.

Dozens of Chinese brands and companies are using the hype surrounding Niu Lai to catch their own viral moment. This is Mixue Ice Cream & Tea (蜜雪冰城).

It's been used all over, and even remixed into songs

The fun doesn't stop after the theater. Everyone now knows that drawn-out awkward "maaaamaaaaa" sound

Some videos showed audiences remaining in their seats for the credits, laughing and applauding again when they realized that every single role had been performed and executed by the same two people, Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang. Voices, editing, music, song, animation,...everything.

But the Niu Lai experience is about more than self-created movie material and memes. It changed the entire movie-viewing ritual. Audiences arrived giggling and excited; some wore cow costumes, and many recorded the screen.

Those self-created posters have become part of the Niu Lai cinema experience.

Manya Koetse @manyapan.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Because there was no official marketing, movie theatres just played with it, did their own posters, or made sure there was poster-sized material and pencils so that moviegoers could create the posters themselves.

That scene has led to countless parodies online, with netizens being super creative about what an alternative Niu Lai trailer might look like, for example, with some Disney flavor.

This microbudget indie movie, initially playing to empty seats, became a viral hit after moviegoers who saw it shared their disbelief at the primitive visuals. The meme machine was set in motion around August 13-14, nine days after opening day. This has become the most meme-worthy "maaamaaaa" scene

No matter how you feel about Niu Lai, we can all agree on one thing: something extraordinary happened in Chinese cinemas this month. A mother-and-son duo’s animated 3D film earned just 342 yuan ($50) on opening day. Then its crude visuals turned it into a viral success. This is a video thread.

This might be one of the more funny videos I saw pop up. People determined to have fun at Shanghai Disneyland during a typhoon with record-breaking rainfall. Wouldn't wanna miss Woody's Roundup!

Shanghai Disneyland cast members were among the many other workers in Shanghai who had to show up to work despite the extreme weather. I can almost feel their expression through their costumes.

Turns out Shanghai really is the "Venice of the East" 😱. Typhoon Baihaitun caused major disruptions and record-breaking rainfall, leaving roads, homes, and entire parking lots completely flooded. In Xujiahui, nearly 316 mm of rain fell within 24 hours, the highest amount ever recorded in Shanghai.

There are actually also many videos where women are the strong (Han) Chinese going against foreigners, but this was just a shorter article, and I didn't go into those numbers. Might be interesting for another deeper dive with gender angle. Source of this video: 妳惹不起 on Wechat.

Then there are videos that take place at airport immigration or border control, showing foreigners arriving without money, carrying drugs, or seeking to exploit Chinese hospitality. The endgame is always the same: they are denied entry and sent back to their country.

Others fall into the category where foreign men are portrayed as sexual and demographic intruders. Although these videos mainly feature Black African men, with Africa portrayed as a kind of dystopia, some also include white or Indian men.

Other videos depict foreigners as arrogant, entitled, and aggressive bullies who believe their nationality places them above Chinese rules. These videos mostly feature white people, but sometimes also Black, Indian, or Japanese characters.

Many of the videos show foreigners engaging in uncivilized behavior and disrupting China’s cleanliness, etiquette, and public order. In these scenes, foreigners are portrayed as dirty, smelly, and disorderly. These videos predominantly feature Indian characters.

This time, it’s different. The latest wave of anti-foreign content goes beyond gender dynamics and focuses more broadly on the negative influence foreigners supposedly have on Chinese people and society.

Anti-foreign content is nothing new on Chinese social media and dates back to the early days of Chinese social media. The age of AI has brought new dynamics to such content. Last year, AI-generated anti-Black videos presented cautionary tales about Chinese women becoming involved with African men.

Chinese viral AI videos are turning foreigners into villains, flooding Chinese social media. They depict foreigners as threats to China’s social, moral, and national order. Strong, confident Chinese people confront, violently beat, and humiliate them in defense of their country. See more below🧵
