Sometimes I think about how the internet has largely been consolidated centralized and corporatized (here included, of course). I'm not sure what the tipping point was, maybe the slow death of forums and their replacement by social networks? SEO definitely plays a major role too.

I think it's broadly useful, but imperfect. It isnt as left wing as I'd personally want, but its a step up from the status quo at least. Since its big tent I think the local chapter's focus kinda determines how useful it is in practice.
