As I said in this article, ultimately it is readers who will be the deciding factor. Shouting online DOES NOT MATTER. What matters is DO YOU READ THE MANGA? DO YOU BUY IT? If you read it on the app, you are voting for more. And more you shall receive. www.thepopverse.com/comics-manga...

How AI translations of manga continues the 'enshitification' of the medium, and why Japanese publishers are "less precious" about it [Popverse Jump]

Translating a manga from Japanese to English isn't a straightforward process, which is why AI will always be terrible at it.

Remember, if you are "curious" about the translation and give it a read on the Viz app? That counts as a vote for further AI translations. They do not care WHY you clicked on it. Only that you DID. So DON'T. Only You Can Prevent AI Translations.

To @viz.com and all other manga publishers: We do NOT want AI-translated manga. Respect translators, letterers, editors, and your READERS. Translation, just like manga, is an ART. So treat it as such! Say NO to AI🚫

The numbers presented are mindblowing, but I wonder just how much of them will CR tap into the future? People are not *just* anime fans, but CR seems to only appeal to "anime-onlys". Netflix is doing a better job with casuals, especially with the international co-productions

That part.

Anime fans’ collective outrage over Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show’s ChatGPT-generated subtitles shows they recognize the vital role of human translators and localizers. After all, it's these human beings’ expert skills and training that have contributed to Crunchyroll’s lofty position as the leading platform for anime fans, not AI. And it should stay that way.

Argh, I'm so mad about this company all over again!! If you really want to get more manga translated and part of the problem is limited number of translators, use some of your millions to pay existing translators! I guarantee this would draw more people to the field and solve your shortage issue!

From a Japan Times article about Orange:
The firm announced that it had raised ¥2.92 billion ($19 million) in funding from major publisher Shogakukan and nine venture capital groups including the government-backed JIC Venture Growth Investments.

But it said only about 2% of Japan's annual output of 700,000 manga volumes are released in English, "partly due to the difficult and lengthy translation process and the limited number of translators."
