Our new research paper is out. We found microplastic ingestion by the blackmouth catshark (Galeus melastomus) in the canyoned continental margins of the Gulf of Lion was high, more than in other parts of the Mediterranean and was influenced by the role of those canyoned margins. Full thread 👇🏻🦈

Una campanya de la UB analitza l’impacte dels microplàstics en la fauna marina a l’Antàrtida:

La contaminació per microplàstics i fibres és una amenaça global que afecta també els ecosistemes marins a l’Antàrtida. Aquestes partícules arriben a les regions més remotes del món, però encara es desconeix com impacten en la cadena alimentària de la vida marina. Els microplàstics influeixen més en espècies que s’alimenten a prop del fons marí? Varia la quantitat de contaminants acumulats al llarg de la cadena alimentària antàrtica? Donar resposta a aquestes incògnites és l’objectiu principal del projecte antàrtic MicroANT, una nova iniciativa de la Universitat de Barcelona en el marc de la campanya antàrtica espanyola 2024-2025.

El projecte es desplega fins al 28 de febrer, a bord del vaixell oceanogràfic BIO Hespérides i a la base antàrtica Joan Carles I, a l’illa de Livingston, a l’arxipèlag de les Shetland del Sud. El dirigeix el professor Lluís Cardona, de la Facultat de Biologia i de l’Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat (IRBio) de la Universitat de Barcelona, i hi participen els investigadors Manel Gazo (UB, IRBio), Odei García-Garín (UdG), Damian Vales (CESIMAR-CONICET, Argentina) i Natalia Paso-Viola (UNTDF-CONICET, Argentina) ...

The study of sediment samples and water column, feces 💩 from pinnipeds 🦭 and penguins 🐧, as well as stomach contents of fish 🐟 and crustaceans 🦐, will allow us to determine the transfer of microplastics along the food chain in the South Atlantic, in both pelagic and benthic environments.

Els balenids poden viure més de 100 anys com a norma i no com excepció (si no se’ls mata abans). Probablement la majoria dels grans balenoptèrids també. Aquesta longevitat no reconeguda comportarà canvis en el coneixement de la seva biologia bàsica i per descomptat en estratègies de conservació 🎂🐋
