In June the Manchester Deaf Education team had the privilege of presenting at the FCEI Kongress Conference, joining colleagues from around the world who are committed to improving outcomes for deaf children and young people through research, practice and partnership.
A key theme running throughout the conference was the importance of working with parents as partners. Across keynote and breakout sessions, there was a strong emphasis on ensuring that research and practice are shaped by the lived experiences of families and grounded in meaningful collaboration.
Dr Lindsey Jones presented From Babble to Biology, exploring the role of caregiver–child interactions in early science learning and their influence on later outcomes and Dr Helen Chilton presented her work on pragmatics, highlighting the importance of understanding and supporting social communication development in deaf children and young people.
What stood out most was the strong sense of shared purpose across the international deaf education community: bringing together research, professional practice and lived experience to support deaf children and their families.
The team left the conference with new ideas, strengthened collaborations and renewed enthusiasm for continuing their important work in Deaf Education at the University of Manchester.
Pictured are Dr Helen Chilton and Dr Lindsey Jones, part of our ManCAD Deaf Education team, with Christine Yoshinaga-Itano and Gwen Carr, both part of the executive group on the FCEI Congress Committee.
