My first book, Island at the Edge of War, was first plotted as a pirate story. The Adriatic at the time was brimming with pirates. As I researched, I found a cool account of an Ottoman attack on the island that I couldn't ignore and became the catalyst event. In the end (almost) no pirates in site.
