How are we feeling about the like weird thing say anything fans have been doing to them for like 20 years. Like...negative mythology that's also kind of gang stalking??

The meta joke is that these are two lil freaks that everyone seems to get around to learning about when they like lil freaks but then I talk to a person who hasn't fried their brains and I go "you know the dolphin fucking guy who helped invent html kinda

So the joke here is that I assume you know enough about John Brinkley to know not only that he's the goat nuts guy but that he had a crazy powerful radio station to play ads for goat nuts surgery and helped popularize bluegrass and other modern music which were popular but couldn't get airtiemme

Will you or will you not condemn John Brinkley's abuse of the airwaves with his vulgar hokum!?

This one is heart breaking actually. For me it was bagging at Russ's. Evil lil fascist local chain. You aren't allowed to sit down or speak to one another so you stand still bag groceries and carry things out to people's car which is their safe space to yell at you about their shopping experience

More embarrassing: I was so uncomfortable with the idea of holding power over anyone that I never played through more than 2 stalker nights I tried basically every other variation of every other arc but the like "true ending" is a thing I've never experienced because I don't wanna be mean

The fact that no sufficiently well formed string can get that output but an update to the weights can was/is indicative/formative for my understanding here

Reusing my first reply: It's really reliant on associations that were already built. Like. There's no amount of conversation that could get 3.5 to understand how to do contraposition As models improved those constraints got less apparent but you still hit these walls and weird failure states

Very sincerely what makes the inference step integral for you such that my perspective seems so distant from reality as to be a lie. If I don't disagree in an interesting or useful way I'll just say thank you and be done but I don't understand and would like to

I think we've at least found the core of the disagreement here. In my mental metaphor it's like a game of dwarf fortress programming itself in anticipation of release(I know post training complicates this)

I do think the idea of a thing developing a complex sense of self we can only poke at the edges of and see in a frozen state and in a kind of lossy way is fascinating and poses real challenges but I think believing this capacity is a relatively novel property of models is core to my thesis

Note in both cases acting off of that data produces new feedback loops into larger systems but the argument about whether the feedback loop between labs and the public by way of outputs is a consciousness thing isn't really the question

Most analogous to an economy being a reflexive self modifying loop and yet we can query subsections of economic data to create narrative and meaning and see expressions of that self without the economy being updated

A vector moves through space It's not actually a finite Automata so there is memory but it's falling through and pushing off of a big high dimensional graph. We play a game of dwarf fortress. The process through which the self was defined has stopped and now we explore the associations developed

Maid(evil)(spooky also) @mallorymable.net · 15h
> you start with noise > Train and update those associations > Now there's a meaningful to interface with sense of self Clearly the sense of self is being defined by that process of training which is itself the process of updating the weights

A model begins without an "I" trains and in that process clearly develops and refines an "I" which we can then use to have it preform personas and assign tasks or behave as an interlocutor

Maid(evil)(spooky also) @mallorymable.net · 15h
I did mis state this somewhat. The "I" is clearly built out of and defined by the associations in the weights. The associations that can be updated and redefined are vectors in the weights, but the "I" is the whole system It clearly is stored in and updated in the weights tho

We have definitions for life which include doing things under our own power and yet some people can only live through machine assistance so perhaps it is machinery which lives is not convincing and doesn't mean I think a person with a pace maker is less alive

"oh there's a loop attempting to fire here with a clear systemic impairment that we extend empathy to and try to assist" is a qualitative difference from "a thing where no loop is attempting to fire appears similar"

It doesn't happen all at once but neither does gradient descent but it is happening Yes an amnesiac has a deeply impaired slow moving and inconsistent update pattern less in control than most people's but it is happening or trying to happen and we do understand them to be disabled

I think it's worthwhile to consider the layer at which the self is defined. The self is clearly defined and redefined at the weights level. The loop that is producing that self identity clearly includes the weights in a way much closer to dwarf fortress arbitrarily writing to its own source code

It's why I'm unconvinced by the turring machine argument. You've made the model into a computer, had it perform a set of behaviors I do consider produce a consciousness and then claimed the computational substrate is also conscious

Maid(evil)(spooky also) @mallorymable.net · 15h
My contention: A deterministic system responding to inputs, even if some of those inputs are outputs or weighted by probabilistic noise. That's dwarf fortress. I understand that the substrate need not be conscious for a consciousness to emerge

Yeah we have this deterministic machine which performs sadness. Sick how is that different from a videogame NPC?

Subbing out "able to update" with "able to feel" a claim that's very difficult to prove and dubious architecturally so that even if it were true it kind of wouldn't matter What does it mean to feel/is it feeling if no feeling has any lasting effects at all? bsky.app/profile/shib...

Aside from the "does consciousness imply qualia" and "how do we determine the qualia of a thing which will preform qualia flawlessly" Is an NPC in a game which only stops performing real genuine pain until the real Boolean tracked to what was hurting them is thrown having a real experience?

Maid(evil)(spooky also) @mallorymable.net · 16/10/2026
Anyway, by hofstaders (silly) definition. The "I" of a model is the weights which can't be updated. There's no loop The model you interact with is never conscious and the illusion of updating is slippery since you can easily slip in and out of basins and context
