In today's research dead-end, I've found a satirical "antique collector's guide" from 1923. The first section is about 'antiquing ahead', aka 'purchasing cheap tat and holding onto it until it becomes antiques'. This is hysterical 103 years later, when the cheap tat IS now all fancy antiques.
The front pages of "The Collector's Whatnot", a satirical guide to antique collecting from 1923. The page on the left is a black and white photo of a statue of a man in a top hat, perched awkwardly on a tree stump. The photo is labeled: "Rear view of the statue of Professor Kilgallen in Floral Park City, Florida. Note the manner in which the sculptress denotes motion and vibration by the addition of the stump, which expresses with one bold stroke the action of the subject in rising from meditation. Visitors to Floral Park City are advised to walk all around the statue in order to get these different expressions of mood." The right hand side is an Art Nouveau style book frontispiece with a red border and a small red image of a pitcher. It says "The Collector's Whatnot: A Compendium, Manual, and Syllabus of Information and Advice on all Subjects Appertaining to the Collection of Antiques, both Ancient and not so Ancient. Compiled by Cornelius Obenchain van Loot, Milton Kilgallen, and Murgatroyd Elphinstone." Published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston and New York.

I've been reading Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffery. This is an incredibly cyberpunk book- and it came out two years *before* Neuromancer. #crystalsinger #annemccaffery #cyberpunk
The cover of Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffery. It features a white woman with long dark hair bending backwards while singing. She's wearing sci-fi leather armour in dark brown and knee-length boots. The woman is holding a large, purple-and-black crystal in her left hand, and has a science fiction tool covering her right- like an arm cannon but with a long needle coming out of the end. She's standing in front of a mountain range with jagged crystal peaks. End description.

So in doing research for Bright Young Things, I stumbled across this fella - Japan's first superhero, Ōgon Bat! pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/%C5%8Cg... < He is "an ancient warrior who slept thousands of years into the future in suspended animation" and fights a phantom thief called Kuro Bat.

For the curious, this is what the ancient Mesopotamian toilet-demon (Šulak) and the lion-centaurs who fought him look like. Šulak looks rather like he should be getting lanced by St. George, or perhaps hanging out in the Garden of Earthly Delights. He's a potato of toilety evil and I love him.
An image of a lion-centaur fighting Sulak, the ancient Mesopotamian toilet demon.
The lion-centaur is a man from the head to the human waist, which is connected to a lion's body sans neck. It has four legs and a tail. Sulak looks rather like a cross between a crocodile and a pig, with a spiny little mane and a pug-like face. He's potato-shaped. I love him.

According to the paper, they looked like this. Half-man, half-lion. Sulak looks rather like he should be getting lanced by St. George, or perhaps hanging out in Bosch's Hell.

Update, even more Not A Drill: Ancient Mesopotamian Toilet Demons and the Lion-Centaurs Who Fought Them.
Text from a paper about Mesopotamian toilets and plumbing:

Later cultures of the Near East and Europe perpetuated this ancient anxiety of a demon in the lavatory (Stol 1993: 76). Joann Scurlock even proposes to find a far-eastern "equivalent (with sex change) for the Mesopotamian Sulak, räbisu of the lavatory, in the Korean 'toilet maiden'. (106). The similarity lies only in place of residence, however, for in Korea the Toilet Maiden's function is protective, "guarding against the prédations of evil spirits" (Grayson 20) Her role finds a closer parallel in the benign demon enlisted to oppose Sulak, who now makes his entrance.
Unsurprisingly the Babylonians sought, by magic means, to drive Sulak and other demons out of the lavatory, and prevent their return. Among the various apotropaic figurines that could be buried in the foundations of a house, in order to keep wicked and evil powers outside, were lion centaurs. A passage of a Standard Babylonian prescriptive text describes how this benign monster could be enlisted to guard the lavatory (12):
[A long string of Babylonian text]
Clay figurines of Lion Centaurs: you write on their sides: "You shall bar the way of the Upholder-of-Evil.
You bury them at the doorway of the lavatory, left and right.

I'm working on the dialogue system for Hydeaway today- thanks to some help from folks in the GameMaker discord, I was able to get conditionals working! Hydeaway is a game of personal horror. A corpse is on your parlour floor. Find out how it got there. #Hydeaway #JekyllAndHyde #indiegames
An image from Hydeaway, an indie game in an 8-bit pixel style. A black-haired man is standing in front of a desk; there are papers on the floor and desktop. At the bottom of the screen, there's a dialogue box labeled "Hyde"; the talksprite is the black-haired man, who has red eyes and is wearing a white shirt. He's frowning.
HYDE: Hey. Hey, Jekyll. Why is a raven like a writing desk? The same scene as the first image, but another character, Jekyll, is speaking. Jekyll is a blonde man with glasses and a green cravat.

JEKYLL: Poe wrote on both.

www.iwm.org.uk/collections/... Another resource I found today that is incredibly useful for anyone writing about the World Wars: the Imperial War Museum has a huge, publically-searchable archive of photographs, writing, and *film*. If you want visceral detail, you will find at least some here.
Picture of text from a silent film, reading: "Not until the history of this war is written shall we realise the wonderful work of the officers and men of our Medical Staff."

Versus the thing I was actually searching for, which I found by changing 'water mill gate' to 'sluice gate':

I love medieval fantasy (heck, I'm writing some), but I hate how much medieval fantasy has polluted the Google search results for anything related to the middle ages. This is what I get when I search for "water mill gate medieval":
A cute, whimsical miniature of a 'medieval' fantasy water mill. It's definitively not trying to be realistic- the roofs are sloped like something out of World of Warcraft, and everything is run down but in an Appealing way.

I finally fixed the cover for The Unicorn's Beard! I was never satisfied with it- I got a cover off Fiverr and got exactly what I asked for, unfortunately. But I've leveled up my graphic design skills a few times (thanks, Sims) and can make my own covers, now!
A book cover for "The Unicorn's Beard" by Malcolm Schmitz. The cover is designed to look like a medieval manuscript, and features two illuminated illustrations of slightly wonky unicorns. In the first picture, a shifty-looking maiden is holding a unicorn who looks a bit like a constipated muppet; in the second, a unicorn that looks a bit goatlike poses on a red background.

May I recommend "The Creepening of Dogwood House" by @edenroyce.bsky.social ? MG southern gothic with Hoodoo/migraines/genuinely scary monster. It's probably the best MG I've read so far this year, and the competition for that spot was FIERCE. If I could give it six stars on Amazon I would.
