I have not read nor do I care to read the book but I through it was pretty clear watching the movie that the online world was polluted with the detritus of infinitely regurgitated pop culture in the same way that the real world was strewn with the wreckage of a failed civilization.

FWIW here is my review from when the movie was in theaters

In Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West, the railroad arrives and brings with it modern civilization, leaving the cowboys to vie for a place in the new world order. In Ari Aster's Eddington, it is the datacenter that arrives to disrupt a small town's way of life, but instead of law and order it brings with it paranoia, insanity and chaos. Our would-be hero, Sheriff Cross, fashions himself as an aw-shucks type holding the community together with a big heart that wonders why we can't just let everyone live and let live. In other words, he is The Great American Manchild who thinks his distaste for wearing a mask on his face is tantamount to a great philosophical stand. As far as cowboys go, he is the end result of generations of degenerative evolution that have turned rugged, principled individualism into entitled, conniving aggreivedness. His shittiness tears his life and community apart.

He is far closer to Leone's villain Frank than he is to the heroic Harmonica, and like Frank he tries to reinvent himself for the new world by fighting with its new weapons- for Frank it was the wheelings and dealings of business, and for Sheriff Cross it is conspiracy and Discourse. And like Frank, when it turns out he is ill suited for these new methods of violence, inevitably The Old Ways must be embraced. Once this choice is made, the film veers into Lynchian territory, embroiling the Sheriff into the reactionary conspiracy of his dreams, almost as if it was ginned up just for him by an algorithm. Lynch would have represented this as an actual dreamstate, but Aster is dealing with the metaversal overlaying of the digital world upon the physical, and therefore Cross' nightmare is consensus reality. Just as the railroad transformed society in its path, the datacenter defines reality itself, drawing the surreal full circle back into the tactile physicality of the Western, leaving us in a new world where everyone has gotten both what they wanted and deserved.

Eddington is a scathing indictment of rightwing grievance politics, satirizing the Western trope of the railroad heralding civilization as the datacenter destroying the fabric of reality, but because it poked the barest amount of fun at white leftists the most humorless people alive lost their shit
