This by @will-davies.bsky.social is a treat - flowing between musical criticism, sociology, and politics - but above all I enjoyed the appreciation of creative genius that is beyond the conscious control or explicit views of those it runs through for a time.

When we stop talking about climate change like it’s a political issue and start talking about it as a shared challenge that we all need to work together to solve, that’s when we’ll finally be able to start talking about saving ourselves. That is our conclusion here!

No, Nicholas Harris - you can’t describe a working class cockney as a “bounder”. They can be a geezer. They can be dodgy. They can be a bit whirr. They can be a bad’un. They can be a lad, a boy. They can be a bit much. They can be a wanker. But they can’t be a bounder. Might as well call him a cad.
A snippet of a New Statesman review of the 70Up programme, which contains the line: “The wise travelling vagrant, the adulterous East End cockney bounder and the prize posh shit - can the mess of life truly produce such clear, predictable, Thackerayan archetypes?”

A great idea. About 15 years ago the NAO came up with a figure of about £15mn per organisational merger or renaming in the UK. They all come with a cost.

Listening to some fabulous music composed by Dobrinka Tabakova. Thinking: I tried to tell my old man about it after I discovered her, as I thought he would love it. But he wasn’t really able to grasp it by then.

Going through a file of old notes, I see that in the margins of a journal article I had printed out (on attempts to answer the question ‘why something rather than nothing?’), I had scribbled: ‘All this stuff about the Intellect, and the Good, and Love is all bollocks’. Oh dear! That’s a shame.

Yes, it’s that simple. 1. Insulate buildings 2. electrify heating & cooling in one go with heat pumps (and HP-fed heat/cooling-networks) 3. Solar shading to avoid overheating “Fabric first” to reduce the need for supplemental heating/cooling “Electrify also” to decarbonise & for max efficiency

Watching a programme with Cat Croxford talking through how she constructs a painting - it’s compelling watching because she’s a great teacher. It’s the best kind of teaching, too, in that it’s not at all concerned with accreditation, but is all about the love of a subject or art in its own right.

It's time the UK Government ditched the term 'Net Zero'. It was always a bad faith idea - both in intention (moving on from talking about climate change) and in reality (there's devil in a lot of detail as to what 'net' means). It was always framed as a way of disguising radical climate policy.
