Our cat Josephine (RIP) had her litter box in the bathroom. After using the litter box, she would modestly unroll just enough toilet paper to cover the evidence. She was a very genteel lady.

It’s hard to capture all details in this brief clip, but please don’t be against ALL money going overseas: We need to restore humanitarian aid that has been obliterated by this administration. When you get to the Senate, you & fellow Dems can make that happen!

Wishin’ and hopin’ Thinkin’ and prayin’ Plannin’ and dreamin’ Won’t get the job done, so we’re writing postcards to voters across America to get out the vote and turn the House and Senate Blue. Here’s just one example. #GOTV @tovoters.bsky.social @deniseforcongress.bsky.social
Color photo of the front and back of postcards to get out the vote. The partially-shown lower left corner of the front displays a general message in blue and red ink: “Don’t forget to vote.” On the back, in blue, red, green, and purple ink, is a message specific to a Nebraska campaign for U.S. House: “Elect Denise Powell to Congress and turn NE-02 Blue. Healthcare you can afford, lower everyday costs, and an end to insider trading. Be among the first to vote early starting October 5.” In the lower corners are brief notes: “Your vote is your voice!” and “Thanks for being a voter!”

If you haven’t already consulted it, John Bunker’s book, “Apples and the Art of Detection” is an informative, copiously illustrated, and fascinating account of adventures in hunting & identifying old apple varieties. Available from Fedcoseeds.com

If you enjoyed the SciAm article about solving the mystery of America’s Apple heritage, you might like the book “Apples and the Art of Detection,” by John Bunker. It offers profiles of old Apple varieties and lively stories of how they’ve been discovered throughout Maine. Available from Fedco.
Photo of the colorful cover of a book, “Apples and the Art of Detection,” by John Bunker. Almost the entire cover is taken up by a stylized painting of an apple tree. Two trunks rise from the exposed roots. The branches are bare against a blue sky, but there appear to be red, green, yellow, orange, and even blue apples falling from the branches. Many more apples, mostly red, lie on the ground. A wooden harvesting pole reaches from lower right corner up toward the tree; its small basket holds one red apple.

We’re so lucky to have catbirds in our yard here in Maine all summer long, but were surprised to discover they’ve just hatched a new clutch this late in the season. Lots of raucous demands emanating from the little “kittenbirds” in our lilac bush these past few days!

Some agencies have jumping ahead to implement OMB’s rule by issuing “guidance” of their own. Unclear whether the pause to OMB rule applies to individual agencies. The comment period for NSF’s has past. It looks like NIH is now pursuing the same objective, but haven’t found docket# for comment yet

A meditation offered by Wendell Berry, one of his loveliest, published in the slim volume “Openings” (Harvest/HBJ 1968): #poetry #WendellBerry
Poem by Wendell Berry: The Peace of Wild Things.

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the green heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
Waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

What a lovely man was Wendell Berry: Craggy and weathered, with strong hands to drive his team of horses, deep thoughts to shape his novels and essays, and beautiful voice to share his poems. Rest in the power of poetry, dear man.

As we suspected. Submitting public comment on this administration’s proposed “correction” to NCA5 might make little (if any) difference, but at least it will show that their actions are under scrutiny and they will be held accountable, by the People, as well as by the planet

Infuriating. Lived thru a version of this during the bad old days of 2008 recession: NSF proposal, high rating, actually approved for funding, but fed $$$ frozen at last minute so project had to be cancelled . At least it wasn’t thumb-on-scale by ideological appointees at the agency.
