I love that the Talmud predicted modern Jewish issues in this story where Rabban Gamliel goes to Rabbi Yehoshua’s house and is like “you have a JOB? 🤯” and Rabbi Yehoshua is like “yeah dumbass…we have no money” (Berakhot 28a)

I came up with this idea of a spiritual “spine,” and complications at this point are going to form a simultaneous upper/lower limit on who we are / have been / could be. This work depicts the moment the amulet is breaking in which Lilith is released.

The image is labeled “reference guide for Lilith amulet.”

Key at the bottom reads:

Blue —C1 (“Atlas” Verteba), First on the spine — breaking to release Lilith
Pink — Names of the Fathers/Mothers (standard part of Lilith Amulets)
Orange — Morning Prayer (Birkot Hashachar) - thanking God for not being made a slave/woman, also for freeing the captive and straightening the bent
Purple — Lilith (standard appearance in amulets)

I went to the Etruscan exhibit at the Legion of Honor yesterday and I was touched to learn that one of their urn styles was in the shape of a small hut. I’d never thought of it, but I think it’s sweet to want to be sent off to the great beyond in a shape that feels so familiar 🥲
