People get viscerally angry at bots not because they think bots are sapient, but because they know someone sapient placed the bot there and is forcing them to interact with the bot, often to delay them from reaching someone sapient who can actually help

If you look at it a certain way, it took me all day to write three simple functions in elisp that will marginally impact my workflow. I'm sure it will pay for itself someday, right? 😂

It is wild to me that some people are aggravated by this when I have never heard of anyone ever being sympathetic to the health care provider who ordered a bunch of tests and everything turned out negative but you were still suffering and they advised you to just stop thinking about it

For real, though, how are you supposed to trust someone who has to constantly remind themselves not to lie all the time?

One thing I've never seen before is a full-scale riot at an airport terminal. That could soon change!

When will people learn that "my wife or best friend is X so how can I possibly be anti-X?" is not a convincing argument?

You can kind of tell an argument is bullshit when the end result is that the person making it won't have to be held accountable for their actions or inaction

Shit I get tempted to ask an LLM: if you analogized computer languages to human languages, would JSON be a pidgin or a Creole?

There are plenty of cynical/doomer ways to interpret this, but I choose to Pollyannishly interpret this to mean we really do have a common cause with Southeast and South Asia

In the absence of evidence, instead of concocting a coherent reason for why a multinational corporation with literally over a thousand subsidiaries worldwide would do something that seems hasty and not well thought out, consider the fact that a corporation is not a unitary entity…

On one hand, yes, if they really wanted to nail you, they wouldn't need a pretext, they'd just cook up some "evidence" with an LLM and railroad you. On the other hand, why are you making their job easier by giving them info they don't have to fabricate?

I can't help but feel like any advice predicated on the notion that this regime will act like laws actually bind it and that they won't weaponize laws to harm you is prima facie going to turn out to be bad advice

Wait, so the stories passed down by my (very recent!) ancestors don't count as knowledge? Like my granduncles who were subjected to the Bataan Death March? My grandfather who got recruited by Philippine guerrillas who was promised benefits from the U.S. but then got denied by the Rescission Act?

Feels like people gotta start letting go of that American Exceptionalism. "It can't happen here!" Bro, are you absolutely sure about that, especially since lots of stuff we thought couldn't happen here are in fact happening here?

At this point, why be afraid that "they're looking for a reason" to murder us when it's clear they never needed a reason—they'll just do it—and they don't need to wait for any evidence

The thing is—the right doesn't need a cassus belli. They've been conducting a war since January 20, escalating with the deployment of the National Guard *and* U.S. Marines against unarmed civilians. Sure, this is pouring gasoline on the flames, but that fire was already burning

Some day historians will point out that the strategy of "enact Republican policies but try to be less outwardly cruel about it" was the stupidest strategy that helped lose elections and hastened the fall of the U.S.

The thing that's especially wack is that even if a doctor plus AI is better at detecting cancer, we have no idea if this combo actually leads to better outcomes. Meanwhile, doctors are straight up lobotomizing themselves

Yes, I know LLMs are not meant for counting and that they're merely another tool that can be used for certain things, but maybe it's valid criticism that they can't count when they're being marketed as "artificial *general* intelligence" meant to replace humans who typically can count just fine

Standing up for the smallest of minorities is important because when you accept the premise that one group are expendable because small or ‘insignificant’, you have accepted the idea of the expendability of human life in general, and the enemy will use your acquiescence to pick off yet more.

The first example that comes to mind is the Bell Riots in Star Trek: DS9. The episode involved time traveling to 2024 and people talk about how prescient the Sanctuary Districts were. But the show was just depicting how bad the crisis of unhoused people in California already was in the 1990s
