Made myself a set of little wallet cards with an adapted version of trigger/freakout management exercises from therapy to keep in my various bags and desk drawers so I’m not remembering everything from scratch when I’m in a bad way
Mags’ hand holds five bifold wallet-sized leaflets1. STIMULUS
What literally, observably happened?

2. STORY
What do I think or fear it means? How strongly do I believe this is true?

Persistent or recurring feelings are usually secondary emotions about the story! Stories stop them from resolving.

3. FEELINGS
What are my emotions?

4. ASK
• Is there evidence for or against this?
• What is the larger situation? What is left out? What is minimized or exaggerated?
• What is the source of this belief? Is it reliable? Does it come from experiences in a different situation?
• Am I confusing the feeling of fear with proof the danger is present? Am I trying to protect myself by mentally acting out how I'd feel if someone hurt me?
• What feelings are about the present?
What feelings are about the past or an imagined future?
Look out for: all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophizing, discounting the positive, mind reading, labeling (I'm a loser, they are unsafe, etc.), blame or self-blame, fixating on proxy issues, wanting to control outcomes5. REFRAME
How else can I think about this? How much do I believe the first story? How much do I believe the reframed story? How am I feeling now?

Looking Beyond

Past: Is this bringing up old stuff for me?
How can I care for those feelings? Have l felt like this before? How did I get through it? What could I do the same or differently?
Present: How are my physical needs? Are there other stressors right now? What can I do to support myself, in this moment or in the bigger picture of my life?
Future: Is there something I can do to make this situation easier if it comes up again? Is there a hurt or fear I can make a plan to address?

The Palestinian Folk Music Archive
The Palestinian Folk Music Archive is a digital platform designed to preserve, connect, and revitalize Palestinian folk songs before they disappear. Drawing from an existing collection of field recordings, the project will combine these materials with a crowdsourcing site where Palestinians everywhere can upload recordings of their parents and grandparents singing the heritage songs of their childhoods. Each contribution transforms private memory into a shared archive–an act of remembrance, resistance, and continuity.

RIP Annie Dillard
[alt text partial, full text at link]

I would like to learn, or remember, how to live. I come to Hollins Pond not so much to learn how to live as, frankly, to forget about it. That is, I don't think I can learn from a wild animal how to live in particular--shall I suck warm blood, hold my tail high, walk with my footprints precisely over the prints of my hands?--but I might learn something of mindlessness, something of the purity of living in the physical sense and the dignity of living without bias or motive. The weasel lives in necessity and we live in choice, hating necessity and dying at the last ignobly in its talons. I would like to live as I should, as the weasel lives as he should. And I suspect that for me the way is like the weasel's: open to time and death painlessly, noticing everything, remembering nothing, choosing the given with a fierce and pointed will.

I missed my chance. I should have gone for the throat. I should have lunged for that streak of white under the weasel's chin and held on, held on through mud and into the wild rose, held on for a dearer life. We could live under the wild rose as weasels, mute and uncomprehending. I could very calmly go wild. I could live two days in the den, curled, leaning on mouse fur, sniffing bird bones, blinking, licking, breathing musk, my hair tangled in the roots of grasses. Down is a good place to go, where the mind is single. Down is out, out of your ever-loving mind and back to your careless senses. I remember muteness as a prolonged and giddy fast, where every moment is a feast of utterance received. Time and events are merely poured, unremarked, and ingested directly, like blood pulsed into my gut through a jugular vein. Could two live that way? Could two live under the wild rose, and explore by the pond, so that the smooth mind of each is as everywhere present to the other, and as received and as unchallenged, as falling snow?

Losing my mind at this years-old beef on r/Pickleball
Post on r/Pickleball: "the world's healthiest sport"

If anyone is watching the US Open, they put a big sign on the court that reads, "the world's healthiest sport." They're definitely reacting to the popularity of pickleball and the recent report about how it (along with other racket sports) can extend your life.

This is not surprising given the recent comments (https://time.com/7015072/pickleball-craze-america/) from USTA President Brian Hainline:

Quite frankly, it’s obnoxious to hear that pickleball noise...Not to put it down, but compared to tennis … seriously?
And of course he is now advocating for "red ball tennis" which is basically tennis with slower balls on smaller (i.e., pickleball) courts. This is his petty way of getting back at pickleball for "eroding" the tennis infrastructure (i.e., taking their courts) - by trying to take back the pickleball courts for tennis.

Tried to take a picture of this cloud last night while it looked like a cool T-rex skull but it changed before I could get to it. What shapes do we see
In a deep blue dusk sky, a white cloud mass with an outline like an inverted teardrop and three large holes in the middle, almost in an arrangement like a windmill, clover, or radioactive symbol. The largest hole, near the bottom of the image frame, opens up to the side of the cloud mass, puncturing the teardrop outline

Deceived! or self-deceived. I can never atone for it. (Stanley Kunitz)
WHAT OF THE NIGHT?

1

One summer, like a stone
dropped down a well,
I sank into myself
and raked
the bottom slime.
When I stretched out my thigh
it touched the dark,
and the dark rolled over me.
A brackish life
filled the cups of my skin.
Then gradually I heard
above the steady
breathing of the land
a high, inhuman chord
light-years away,
out of a cleaner space,
a more innocent age,
as when pilot angels
with crystal eyes and streaming hair
rode planets through the skies,
and each one sang
a single ravishing note
that melted
into the music of the spheres.2

What wakes me now
like the country doctor
startled in his sleep?
Why does my racing heart
shuffle down the hall
for the hundredth time
to answer the night-bell?
Whoever summons me has need of me.
How could I afford
to disobey that call?
A gentle, insistent ring
pulled me from my bed,
from loving arms,
though I know
I am not ready yet
and nobody stands on the stoop,
not even a stray cat
slouches under the sodium lamp.
Deceived! or self-deceived.
I can never atone for it.
Oh I should be the one
to swell the night with my alarm!
When the messenger comes again
I shall pretend
in a childish voice
my father is not home.

“During the same period, Luxemburg also pressed several plants from the prison garden, including carrot, grape hyacinth, borage, elm, asparagus, and red goosefoot. On September 18, 1915, she dated an elm leaf that blew into her cell from the prison yard.” (Rosa Luxemburg’s Herbarium, Claudia Horn)
During the same period, Luxemburg also pressed several plants from the prison garden, including carrot, grape hyacinth, borage, elm, asparagus, and red goosefoot. On September 18, 1915, she dated an elm leaf that blew into her cell from the prison yard. In letters from Wronke and in Wrocław she lamented the absence of a garden. But even there, in the courtyard, she spotted and identified flowers and watched insects and birds.

In a letter to Mathilde Jacob dated February 7, 1917, Luxemburg wrote:

On my grave, as in my life, there will be no pompous phrases. Only two syllables will be allowed to appear on my gravestone: "Tsvee-tsvee." That is the call made by the great tit[mouse], which I can imitate so well that they all immediately come running.... In spite of the snow and frost and loneliness, we believe-the titmice and I—in the coming of spring!

In the context of her confinement, the herbarium reflects both Luxemburg's affinity for botany and the tensions she sometimes felt between her passion for the natural sciences and her political obligations.
In a letter to Sophie Liebknecht sent from Wronke prison on May 2, 1917, Luxemburg confessed:What am I reading? For the most part, natural science: geography of plants and animals.... You know, sometimes, it seems to me that I am not really a human being at all, but rather a bird or beast in human form. Inwardly, I feel so much more at home in a plot of garden like the one here, and still more in the meadows when the grass is humming with bees, than at one of our party congresses.

But Luxemburg's sensitivity to and recognition of her diverse human and non-human surroundings did not translate into political resentment, passivity, or resignation, as she went on to reflect in the same letter:

Surely I can tell you this, since you will not immediately suspect me of betraying socialism! You know that, in spite of it all, I really hope to die at my post, in a street fight or in prison. But, my innermost self belongs more to my titmice than to the "comrades." And not because I find a restful refuge in nature like so many morally bankrupt politicians. On the contrary, in nature too, with every step, I find so much that is cruel that I suffer very much.

This part kills me. It’s not even “$2 million to investigate whether Bigfoot is real,” it’s like “$2 million for dental care for Bigfoot, to be administered to Bigfoot”
Mt. Sinai will also pay a monetary penalty and dedicate $2 million to providing free medical care to individuals suffering harmful consequences of "gender affirming care" they received as children.
