I'm dreaming about a meadow garden for next year. I want it to be fluffy.. boneset, joe pye weed, mountain mint, blazing star, goldenrod, some northern sea oats and groundnut in there - maybe both purple and red monarda? Don't ask me where I'm finding the space

it's #weirdpoemwednesday apparently
my translation of a Wang Fanzhi 王梵志/"Brahmacarin Wang" poem:

i have a couple acres of land
plantings on the south mountain slope
four or five pine trees of my own
and two or three hills of beans as well.
when it's hot i just go for a dip in the pond
or take the cool breeze singing on the bank
i come and go as i please and i've got enough
so i'd like to see somebody try me now.

--attributed to "Brahmacarin Wang," fl. 7th/8th c.

吾有十畝田,種在南山坡。
青松四五樹,綠豆兩三窠。
熱即池中浴,涼便岸上歌。
遨遊自取足,誰能奈我何。

Invasive plants are more abundant than native and introduced plants at home and abroad - Biological Invasions
Invasive plants are often observed and assumed to be locally abundant, which likely increases their ecological impacts. However, there are few macroscale comparisons of invasive versus non-invasive sp...

Ospreys do eat young blue catfish (that's nearly all that's there, now), but PCBs and other contaminants may pose a threat - and it doesn't seem like they are adequately replacing menhaden in osprey diets.

Thomas Winfield Marie @magpine.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
This article is missing a major threat amplifying fishing pressure in the Chesapeake Bay - invasive blue catfish, which predate heavily upon menhaden (and lots of other native species). They dominate estuarine environments in the Chesapeake bay in truly astonishing abundance and density.

My cat will sit and observe, dangling his tail in the water. His tail has dense fur so he doesn't realize it's getting wet until after he leaves the bath and it starts dripping behind him

Biologists, are we using the term "parent species" to describe the taxa encompassing a subspecies? Or is there another phrase which is more clear?

My landlords yard guy weedwhacked my Carolina lupine 😭

Thomas Winfield Marie @magpine.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I'm on the brink of staging a stakeout to find out WTF is eating the Carolina lupine. They've also gone for the redbud and the Baptisia so they seem to have a taste for legumes (and who can blame them). The plants are all there for the bugs but I want the lupine to have a chance to establish

I have lots of gorgeous sedges which I want to host butterflies, but I don't think there's enough food in my area to summon them to lay eggs. Next year I'll focus on bigger/phenologically varied floral rewards... I just love grasses and sedges so much I keep planting those.
000
Thomas Winfield Marie @magpine.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I might need some higher-reward flowers nearby - I've got a tall meadow rue which is also attracting flies, and some northern sea oats which are gorgeous but not appealing to bugs at the moment. The monarda, sage, and baptisia have all gone by and my Carolina lupine is being suspiciously defoliated

Thomas Winfield Marie @magpine.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
My mountain mint seems to be attracting mostly flies and a few black and white wasps (visitors I'm happy to see!). It seems like other people see a lot of bees and butterflies, but none on mine - it's not blooming super profusely though there are quite a few infloresences.

difficult-to-cancel subscriptions across 15 or 20 news sites just to read these articles. I subscribe to one or two whose articles I'm consistently interested in, but I'd love to be able to read more broadly and support journalism - outside of a subscription model. 2/2

This is a real question for journalism folks on here - why don't online news sites allow me to buy access to a single article? I close out of articles I'm interested in so often due to paywalls. Some of them I'd pay a couple bucks to read. But I just will not sign up for ongoing, 1/2

ELECTROFISHING / ATLANTIC SALMON

ZAP! Ha Ha Ha!
We heard you and we came.
We wanted to taste the anode, since we had no choice.
Your stun gun hijacked our muscles.
Now we are here to laugh at you and dance in your bucket.
Ha Ha Ha! We all saw you when you slipped in the river
and you lost the grip of your hip waders
and cold electrified water got in the rubber.
YES! That is the sort of thing we really love. That is why we came.

By now you may have noticed:
We are not the Atlantic Salmon you were hoping for.
We are the Elopomorph Superorder.
We are like olms with eyes or like worms with bones.
We are the treasured jesters of your nets. We are
THE AMERICAN EELS!

Do not be impressed by frogs who go between
wet mud and wet leaves. We have seen the only two sides
of the world.
Salt and not salt.
These are the absolute antipodes.
Because of this it is very natural and easy for us to die or be born
or move between other such states of matter.
NO BIG DEAL!

But your hands are horrible to touch and unlike us.
Your current could hold us only because we LOVE currents.
We do not love your hands and so we are going now.
We know where the salmon went.
We have seen them on the way to our own secret place.
They are chasing a different anode
far more convulsing than yours. No offense.
ZAP! Ha Ha Ha.
We aren't telling!

I mentioned taking some steps to avoid it in a pregnancy group I'm in, and got "don't worry, it doesn't harm your baby, it only gives you explosive diarrhea". OK but you can see why that might be something I'd like to avoid? For my own sake???

Various feelings about the new NYT piece on native plant gardening (positive and some negative) - but one complaint is that the author refers consistently to Doug Tallamy as "Tallamy" and to Cindy Tallamy as "Cindy". I double checked - she does indeed have a last name (like most women!)

I noticed that too. I think when you are using hue in a spectrum as they do here you imply similarity/distance based on the colormap- putting ie majority black and Latino communities in very high contrast with majority white communities as "more different" vs. other group comparisons
