Just mailed in my absentee ballot. Godspeed, lil piece of paper.
I am holding up the top portion of the ballot envelope, with a red section saying official return and a stamp featuring Jimmy Carter. Behind me is some bird related art banners.

The same Cook Inlet with large tides, ice flows, and so much silt that the Anchorage Port has to be dredged every few years? You want to build a giant underwater data center where?

What is it about Alaska that makes us a magnet for every ludicrous clearly-never-gonna-happen megaproject that people dream up? www.adn.com/business-eco...

Underwater data center proposed for Alaska’s Cook Inlet by East Coast company
A similar project proposed off the coast of Maine has stirred debate about how it may impact its fishing-dependent economy.

A shore walk on Kuiu island a few days ago. Not pictured, the bear we saw in the meadow a few hours later, quietly eating grass. We were able to watch him for several minutes before he headed off into the woods.

Hiking in Kenai Fjords National Park yesterday - got on the trail at 7am and there were only 4 other cars in the parking lot. Was digging up some photos of the same trail in 2015 - we have lots a lot of ice since then.
Exit Glacier, white with crevasses and some black moraine material in the middle, flows down from the Harding Icefield. Willows and alders are growing think in the foreground. Snow covers ridge frames the photo on the left. I worked as a volunteer on Rathlin in2006 when ferret behavior was first being studied there. So happy to hear the island and its quarter million seabirds are now free from ferret predation.

I continue to resent the fact that if I had pitched the last 10 years as the background to a contemporary fantasy novel, my editor would’ve laughed me out out of the building and told me that it was too heavy-handed and ridiculous for anyone to believe.

There's this episode of Star Trek where Captain Picard is captured and tortured, and the main way that the torturer tries to break him is by showing him four lights, and telling him that there are five. There are four lights. This is not a post about Star Trek.

Grateful to be starting off 2026 in a remote place, sharing stories and helping people experience the beauty and wildness found at some of the furthest corners of the map. Sending love to all who are looking forward to 2026 with guarded optimism.

Merry Christmas from a boat in Antarctica! The weather has been calm and the penguin chicks are hatching. Beautiful time of the year. Photo by John Shedwick.

Visiting Deception Island in the South Shetlands during our most recent Antarctica trip. The work is intense but boy does it bring me to some incredible places.
I am standing on a barren rocky ridge in waters and holding orange marker poles. Far below me sits a small cruise ship, with the glacier capped peaks of the Deception Island caldea behind me. A line of people in yellow parkas descending from the rocky, desolate ridge toward Stancomb Bay on Deception Island.

Some photos from Charleston WV today. Mom and I and an estimated 200 people marched 2 miles from the federal courthouse to the state capitol, and joined an estimated 2000 people at the rally there. Fewer people in the square due to the heat but the shade trees were standing room only.
The front steps of the WV state capitol with protesters in the front and with the gold dome in the background. A sculpture of Lincoln on the left. I have always heard that the statue was meant to embody his ghost, which according to legend, walks the halls of the US Capitol during times of trial. Two protesters dressed up as Mario and Luigi. Their sign says Mario and Luigi rescue Princess Liberty. Crowds under the shade trees just off the Capitol plaza.

Did a short term foster for a local shelter for this lovely senior dog. His favorite thing was snoozing on the porch while wrapped in a blanket. Shelters are still really full in a lot of places; please visit your local one if you feel like there is room in your life for a critter.

Every time I turn my back these bushes are popping out more blueberries. Some of these things are the size of grapes. Smoothies for days…
Blueberries the size of BB pellets, all over a low lying, lusciously green small bush.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 people attended Juneau, Alaska’s #NoKings rally today under clear skies. That’s based on a series of clickers used by organizers. There were 6-10 silent counterprotesters on the bridge above.
