Sorry if it’s a little sloppy I drew most of these at 3-4 am over some days (with the other units as well🙏)
I tried incorporating some events in their race outfits.

Mafuyu has ribbons on her legs to represent how she’s prized (by her mother), as well as trapped and restrained in pleasing her mother’s ambitions
(The idea was to make mafumom a human so she could make Mafuyu fulfill her dreams that only being an Uma can do (racing)). Mafumom is her trainer.

Mizuki used to race, but quickly realized that it wasn’t for her. She’s a fashion designer for racing attire now (Rui makes inventions to improve an Uma’s wellbeing/wellness in training and racing and collaborates w/ Mizuki).

Ena is ambitious and strives to capture the essence and beauty of racing through her art. She wants to tackle the triple crown + other races, but is unsupported by her father, telling her she cannot fully commit to both art and racing as a career at the same time. Honami becomes her trainer later.

Kanade retired early due to health complications. Her trainer is Honami (who is also an Uma) and both connect with Ena and the rest of niigo to train for their races (Honami trains l/n).

(This is what I had in mind for short lore making when I was drawing this).

and only then, did she learn to really love them deeply and grew so attached to them. she’s very loving! but not in the conventional way that’s expected of her and she doesn’t seem to have an interest in achieving that, if anything, it annoys and angers her or makes her anxious and uncomfortable.

even when given an “ideal” family in wl2, she chooses niigo. even when trying to find acceptance in her family, she only truly trusts niigo. even when she doesn’t know the words for her feelings, she knows niigo is her home. she always wants to be with them and go to them for comfort.

there was definitely a balance to the nuance of mafumom’s writing that didn’t have to be infantalizing her and treating her as someone who 100% didn’t know better and was doing her best. you’re supposed to feel sorry for mafuyu blaming herself and feeling guilty at the end, not agree with her.

that’s why mafuyu runs. mafuyu TRIES so hard to get along with her mom just to be traumatized again. it’s always impact over intent and i’m always gonna be on mafuyu’s side and feel sorry for her first before her mom 😭

exactly 😭 and even if the intent wasn’t “hurt/scar mafuyu”, there’s still an intent in “win the argument” “be the one in the right” “be pitied” “scare mafuyu back on the right path” etc. and these mindsets can lead into abuse easily. mafumom controlled mafuyu with the intent to do so.
