'Backrooms' is One of the Most Interesting Horror Films This Year
Backrooms is unsettling. It gripped me in ways I wasn't immediately able to shake off. I didn't know why at first, but the longer I sat with the film, the clearer the reason became. As a society, we talk a... Read more...

The Return to A Galaxy Far, Far Away Has Never Felt More Pointless
The Mandalorian and Grogu is one of the most uninspired movies I've seen this year. It's less of a movie and more of a prolonged episode of television, one that comes between two big storylines in the season and serves... Read more...

I liked #TheDevilWearsPrada2 more than expected. It understands journalism & how publications are always one step away from being bought out. The story had depth, the fashion was excellent, and the cast fabulous. I only wish the score was more prominent & the funnier moments had more breathing room.

I got to be a guest on The Middle Geeks podcast where I had a really fun convo with @spiderswarz.bsky.social and @maeabdu.bsky.social about whether having The Mummy in the title helps it or works against it. And the difference between inclusion and authenticity (not the same thing!)

Whitewashing ‘Wuthering Heights’ Now Hits Differently
Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights has been adapted to the big screen numerous times and, save for Andrea Arnold’s 2011 version, has largely been consistent in one disappointing way: the whitewashing of...

It's snowy and cold, but I've got a few published pieces to share that have made me happy this week. First, happy #Bridgerton day to those who celebrate! I wrote about Lady Violet Bridgerton and Lord Marcus Anderson's budding romance in Season 4 and why it's important for @opinion.bloomberg.com:

This Is the ‘Bridgerton’ Love Story That We Needed to See
This article includes spoilers for Bridgerton.Bridgerton is finally giving us a proper older couple romance in Season 4, and the rest of Hollywood should take note.

Absolutely loved #TheHousemaid. Amanda Seyfried is especially fantastic! Read my review for @geekgiririotus.bsky.social:

The Housemaid: Amanda Seyfried Is Deliciously Unhinged In Paul Feig’s Addictive Psychological Thriller
The Housemaid is a deliciously addictive watch. More Amanda Seyfried, please.

That industries are trying to have AI take over nearly every job is not only terrifying but genuinely demoralizing. The job market is already so bad 🥹

“This will not be a movie I revisit… but Brooks and his cast do something that is hard to come by, creating a middle-of-the-road movie that will either make your eyes roll or your heart melt.” MY REVIEW OF #EllaMcCay for @geekgiririotus.bsky.social: riot-us.com/2025/12/10/e...

You will either love or hate Ella McCay, but it’s aggressively average.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey Review: Colin Farrell & Margot Robbie's Romantic Fantasy Is A Study In Manufactured Sentimentality
A rousing story about finding someone and falling in love this is not — nor does it truly contend with the need for human connection very well.

TUNER is a solid film. Leo Woodall is especially great as the titular character who gets caught up in heists to help pay off his friend’s medical debt. Great sound design and story that’ll keep you engaged. #TIFF50 #TIFF2025

THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE was not for me. A hollow film that doesn’t offer any real depth or insight into the real-life woman it follows. Amanda Seyfried’s performance and singing voice are excellent though. #TIFF50 #TIFF2025

Bad Apples Review: The Most Unhinged Dark Comedy You'll See This Year Boasts A Wildly Funny Saoirse Ronan Performance
The film is genuinely funny, and the cast is up to the task as the story balances impending consequences for Maria’s actions and gasp-inducing comedy.

HAMNET is definitely a must-see. It will move you to tears — happy and sad. It’s a gorgeously shot, masterfully told and acted film. Best of fest so far. #TIFF50 #TOFF2025

Steve TIFF Review: Cillian Murphy Gives A Stirring Performance In Experimental Drama, But It's Jay Lycurgo Who Steals The Show
With a phenomenal ensemble, the supporting actors, namely Jay Lycurgo, is so excellent that I would’ve liked the film to focus more on them.

Recap of films seen today at #TIFF2025: Sentimental Value - amazing, perfect, no notes. A Private Life - an interesting drama that has good intentions but is a bit all over the place. It Was Just an Accident - a strong story of vengeance with an even stronger cast. I was riveted the whole time.

Sentimental Value is phenomenal. So much feeling and things left unspoken, which authentically touches upon the depth of the father/daughter relationship at its core. Amazing performances and layered storytelling. Joachim Trier does it again. #TIFF50 #TIFF2025
