Direction 1: Survivor-Led Vigilantism

Two situations in which prominent anarchist men were

confronted and attacked by groups of women in New York and Santa Cruz made waves in anarchist circles in 2010. The debates that unfolded across our scenes in response to the actions revealed a widespread sense of frustration with existing methods of addressing sexual assault in anarchist scenes. Physical confrontation isn't a new strategy; it was one of the ways survivors responded to their abusers before community accountability discourse became widespread in anarchist circles. As accountability strategies developed, many rejected physical confrontation because it hadn't worked to stop rape or keep people safe. The trend of survivor-led viqilantism accompanied by communiqués critiquing accountability process models reflects the powerlessness and desperation felt by survivors, who are searching for alternatives in the face of the futility of the other available options.

I was asked by a dear friend to write this piece about accountability within radical communities offer some insight in light of the years we've spent fighting against rape culture. Except I don't believe in accountability anymore. It should be noted that my anger and hopelessness about the current model is proportional to how invested I've been in the past. Accountability feels like a bitter ex-lover to me and I don't have any of those... the past 10 years I really tried to make the relationship work but you know what?

There is no such thing as accountability within radical communities because there is no such thing as community - not when it comes to sexual assault and abuse. Take an honest survey sometime and you will find that we don't agree. There is no consensus. Community in this context is a mythical, frequently invoked and much misused term. I don't want to be invested in it anymore.

I think its time to abandon these false linguistic games we play and go back to the old model. I miss the days when it was considered reasonable to simply kick the living shit out of people and put them on the next train out of town - at least that exchange was clear and honest. I have spent too much time with both survivors and perpetrators drowning in a deluge e of o words that didn't lead to healing or even fucking catharsis.

in the case of sexual assault I think retaliatory violence is appropriate, and I don't think there needs to be any kind of consensus about it. Pushing models that promise to mediate instead of allow confrontation is isolating and alienating. I didn't want mediation through legal channels or any other. I wanted revenge. I wanted to make him feel as out of control, scared and vulnerable as he had made me feel. There is no safety really after a sexual assault, but there can be consequences.

We can't provide survivors safe space

- safe space, in a general sense, outside of close friendships, some family and the occasional affinity just doesn't exist. Our current models of accountability suffer from an over-abundance of hope. Fuck the false promises of safe space - we will never get everyone on the same page about this. Let's cop to how hard healing is and how delusional any expectation for a radical change of behavior is in the case of assault. We need to differentiate between physical assault and emotional abuse - throwing them together under the general rubric interpersonai vioience doesn't heip.

Cyclical patterns of abuse don't just disappear. This shit is really really deep - many abusers were abused and many abused become abusers. The past few years I have watched with horror as the language of accountability became an easy front for a new generation of emotional manipulators. It's been used to perfect a new kind of predatory maverick - the one schooled in the language of sensitivity - using the illusion of accountability as community currency.

The idea that trans people are to blame for GOP campaign spending against Democrats has always been extremely stupid. Obviously, if they didn't run these ads (which are not proven to be highly effective) they would simply run other ads with the same money. Me in December 2024:

One other potential reason for the focus on trans rights could have been to persuade Democratic politicians to take a more conservative position on trans rights, so that they could get enough votes in the Senate to pass legislation such as bathroom bans or the codification of "biological sex." This reason is particularly compelling, since the ads seem to have potentially swayed the minds of at least a few Democrats in Congress.

Focus group data from anti-trans ads might have reinforced the decision to invest in these ads, but that doesn't mean that it was the most efficient possible use of that money. If Democrats had a more conservative position on trans rights, the GOP still would have spent $200 million on TV ads to persuade swing voters, which they could have used to focus on more broadly salient topics such as inflation or immigration.

When asked how their B grade for Acton aligns with the grade’s requirement of “supportive public statements,” Dwayne Steward at Equality Ohio responded stating, “In the Equality Ohio Candidate Scorecard, a ‘B’ means ‘insufficient record but supportive public statements.’ The reduced score reflects our concern about support of trans Ohioans, alongside her broader record and positions, as stated above.” He then pointed to other statements Acton had made that the organization considers supportive, such as that she “will always stand up for Ohioans, including the LGBT community,” and that “as governor, she is committed to standing up to discrimination and ensuring all Ohioans receive equal protection under the law.” Neither statement mentions transgender people.

When asked if Equality Ohio requested Acton retract her statement calling trans girls “boys” and her support for a sports ban, Equality Ohio did not answer that portion of the question. And when asked about Acton barring the Pride Caucus vice chair from the call and failing to appear at her own meeting, Equality Ohio pointed elsewhere: “We recommend you speak to the Acton Campaign directly about any meetings their team conducted. Dr. Acton’s comments didn’t happen in a vacuum. They’re part of a broader pattern of politicians using trans people as a scapegoat, often based on data that’s simply false. I am so critical of mass surveillance, I write critically about these Al companies, I write critically about their lobbying efforts, I report very critically on the Al industry, but I also cover consumer products, and I want people to understand how these products work. Oh my gosh. A while ago, I wrote a piece for Vanity Fair where I used the phrase "deeply human." That's actually a phrase I use a lot. I use adverbs a lot. And somebody was like, "This is Al." I actually had to show the edit history to prove it was my own bad writing.
