Look at this amazing pumpkin
A really big, really fresh, really orange pumpkin with a big, coiled, deep green stem. It’s sitting next to a large unbloomed white mum plant in an equally big ceramic pot. A blue speckled glass star on a stake is in the mum.

RS with your home river. I grew up in many places, so I don’t know what “home” is, other than where I’m at. The Patuxent River is a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. I live at the mouth of the river, as it opens into the bay. It’s quite salty. Like me.

Wolf Trap again! This time it’s the Grateful Dead Symphonic Experience, and it looks, smells, and sounds like a Dead Show already. (We have seats, but are sitting outside to have snacks.)

On this day, kind of a long time ago, we took leave from orders that conveniently pre-positioned us in San Dog, stuffed ourselves and a mess of silk crepe into a crappy rental car, headed over to the Hotel Del, and got hitched on the beach at sunset with a handful of dear friends and family.

Lola, my silly little guy.
My silly little brown dog with big ears, wearing a bright pink knitted snood made to accommodate those big ears. Her expression is an indescribable mix of quizzical and concerned.

Got new entryway lighting today. This chandelier is made of re-purposed bud vases. Not bad for an old botanist, eh?
A picture taken from the top of the stairs, looking down into a high-ceiling foyer area. There is a pretty three-tiered chandelier, all glass and light, and the electrician nearby, on scaffolding.

A poem, "Patria," by Keith Boynton, dated 04 July, 2025

You do not love her less when her skirts are torn,
Her standard bloody, dragging in the mud,
Her ankles fettered, chafed, her eyes cast down.
Her ghoulish captors dancing her defeat.

This is the time, instead, to love her more,
With all the fervency of desperate hope,
Which sees, beyond the black horizon, fire
Which may be battle, or the burst of dawn.

The squirrels do not like it. The ducks/osprey/heron are tolerating it. Lola is over it. I’m loving it, because aircraft typically fly a little bit slower here, and I do have a pretty good understanding of the need, the need for speed. 😂🫠
Lola, grimacing, ears back slightly, annoyed by the zorching.

I live close - <1 mile as the F-18E/F flies - to Pax River Naval Air Station, so am(very) accustomed to flight activity, but this week has been a treat. For the past 3 days, the Blue Angels have been practicing, giving VIP rides, and generally zorching all over the airspace. This is above my house.

Here he is in front of 153369, now at Udvar-Hazy. This was at the aircraft retirement event out at Dulles in 2015 (with fancy paint job). This a/c was also in his squadron and he flew it frequently. It was the same one that evacuated Ambassador Martin from the embassy in Saigon in 1975.

Here he is in front of another one he used to fly (when it was still gray; they restored the OG green paint for the aircraft’s retirement). This aircraft pictured is the same one used to evac Ambassador Graham Martin from the roof of the embassy from Saigon.

We took my parents over to the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum today, and we saw this. Here’s my husband in front of the very helo he flew really heavy over the Haditha Dam in 2006 and did some crazy pilot shit to keep it flying. AKA why we’re lucky he and thirteen other Marines are still here.

Here it is! Next time you're on a flight and they nail the plane to the runway, say nice, two-wire to the pilots (both of them, since you don't know who did the landing). Because whoever did the landing, they flew Navy.

I’m not as old as this makes me sound, I just grew up with parents who watched it, but: S4, E25 of M*A*S*H: “The Interview” wrecks me every goddamn time. It took me awhile to know that my husband and I were lucky to do our jobs for the Navy and Marine Corps when we did.
Alan Alda, as Hawkeye Pierce, in MASH. This is the most humorless and poignant episode, and its contrast to the ordinary level of humor on the show is probably why it gets me. Or that it so well captures the utterly chronic and unrelenting heartbreak that is war.
