Continuing the theme of ghostly beings for #folklorefriday we will be covering the Thaye from the folklore of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Myanmar is a Southeast Asian country located on the coast between India and Thailand. 1/5

The Thaye can turn invisible and will spread minor illness (such as a fever or cold). They will attack any human they encounter and can be repelled by a purification ritual. 5/5

They roam on the outskirts of villages and near cemeteries. They particularly like cemeteries, as they will feast on the flesh of the recently deceased. The Thaye will usually wander into villages at noon or just after nightfall. 4/5

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Thaye are tall, have oversized ears, tusk-like teeth, elongated fingers, and long slimy tongues. A Thaye can also sometimes be a pregnant woman with a fat, pale white body, and huge elephant-like ears. 3/5

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Thaye are often the ghost of a person who has died a violent death or an evil person who has been condemned to wander as a spirit after death. While the appearance of the Thaye can vary on the deceased, they tend to share some common traits. 2/5

Most people have finally stopped mentioning GLP-1s in my presence after harsh pushback. I'm actually getting more MAHA stuff about what I'm eating, even from strangers in the grocery store.

The concept of the Mare has also led to works of art such as The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli. The difference is that the ghostly woman is replaced by a squat demon. This depiction of being a demon happened to many beings in folklore as Christianity continued to try to erase Pagan beliefs. 9/9

A woman asleep on a bed with a squat demon sitting on her abdomen, while a black horse with vacant white eyes peeks out from behind a curtain.

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Another method is to put boiled water in a newly bought jug, plugged with a new cork. The Mare will request that the cork be removed and not return after it is done. 8/9

100

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

You could ward off a Mare by placing a pair of slippers upside down by your bed. If the Mare has already been to your home, offer it a cold bowl and buttered bread for breakfast. It will not return after that. 7/9

100

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Mares would also tangle the manes of horses, ensnarl the hair of sleeping people, and twist the branches of pine trees. They would also take people’s horses for rides in the night, leaving them exhausted come morning. 6/9

100

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

These men could only be awoken from the Mare’s spell by calling out their baptismal name. If their baptismal name is never spoken, then the Mare will return each night until the man dies. 5/9

100

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

The Mare is often seen in the nude and will sit on the chest of men as they sleep. Her victim would be drenched in sweat, unable to speak, feel incredibly anxious, have difficulty breathing, and feel as if they were being suffocated. 4/9

100

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

The sinful and confession aspects were added to the lore as Christianity was replacing Pagan beliefs. 3/9

100

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

The Mare can be the spirit of a woman who was wronged in life, the ghost of a sinful woman, a woman who died without giving confession, or a woman who died from a broken heart as her betrothed married another instead. 2/9

There is this sense of shame for being as the gamers say, "mid." I like being a middling artist & writer. You are still talented & entertaining, but you have room to grow/improve. There is way less pressure & eyes on you. It's a good place to start without being overwhelmed.

Myrtle (They/Them) @madmyrtle.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

I would much rather grow things in time than have sudden fame through gimmicks or a person that I'd have to keep up. I'm way too tired & anxious for that.

That said, I do once in a blue moon look at my Patreon stats. I was overjoyed to see that it has gotten 76 views. Which is a big number to me, especially since I just started it this year. Sure, I have 0 followers & 0 subs, but I'm not worried about that. The economy sucks & it'll grow in time.

I may be embarrassing myself here to some people with this, but I don't see it that way. I'm not a metrics driven person. I'm not checking my follower counts every day or trying to figure out the best way to drive engagement. This is just me being me & hoping my stuff brings joy/entertainment.
