As we all head to Bournemouth for the @humanists.uk Humanism in Action day, Festival of Humanism, and AGM (long weekend!) Our Heritage Manager @madeleineog.bsky.social‘s search through the archive for notable historic Dorset Humanists has proved fruitful…
Thomas H. Bastard, who has just died in his 101st year, was unwearied in his devotion to the Rationalist movement. It was at his suggestion that "Tulian " (also, alas, among the unnumbered dead wrote his booklet, Bible Words: Human, not Divine; and he was one of the earliest subscribers to the Rationalist Press Committee and to the Liberty of Bequest Committee.
At Blandford, in Dorset,
where he lived, he founded a Secular school, which is still Aourishing.
He numbered
among his most cherished
acquaintances many of our leading educationalists. Almost to the last he retained full possession of his faculties.

Conway Hall is integral to the history of ethical thinking in the UK - but we need your support to ensure it remains a place where people can come and think together well into the future. Please donate to our Crowdfunder if you’re able! www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/qr/BWdqeewn @conwayhall.bsky.social

Today is five years since the launch of the Humanist Heritage website @humanists.uk! 🥳 Easily one of the things I'm most proud of and a project that's been endlessly inspirational, educational, & collaborative. So grateful to all the volunteers, archives, experts & others who brought it into being 💝

I thought this point Eric made about how libraries are early introductions to a social contract was really interesting, too:
“And what I think is so amazing about that is not only do you start to feel like you you are welcome in and belong in this place, the public library, but also you start to learn what it means to be part of a community. Because, let’s say you love Curious Georgebooks and you take out a Curious George book. You get the generosity of your society because it’s like “Here, take this Curious George book home, it’s free. Just bring it back and keep it in good shape. Don’t tear out the pages. Don’t write in it.” And you learn that you want to do that—not only because they tell you—but also because when you return it, you want to get the next Curious George book. And you realize that if the other kids in the community don’t return the book, or don’t take care of their books, you won’t be able to take it out. So, you learn mutual obligation and reciprocity from an early stage.”

'No one has changed the history of the world more profoundly than the people who, with the self-permission to defy the prohibitive dogmas of their time and place, have broadened the horizon of possibility for others' - @mariapopova.bsky.social www.themarginalian.org/2025/12/18/m... ☀️

Looking forward to visiting @hhe-humanists.bsky.social tomorrow, not least because I get to talk about the intriguing Hannah Clark, founder of a school in East Grinstead where moral education replaced religious instruction - regularly advertised in @newhumanist.bsky.social from the 1890s

Of #HumanistHeritage interest: Wheeldon's funeral was described in the press as being 'devoid of Christian ritual' and 'sensational in its simplicity'.
