I'm so happy to be back at ILiADS at @vassar.bsky.social this year. 11 years of digital scholarship summer camp!
A woman stands at a podium in front of a projector that has a slide titled "Origins of ILiADS" with dates and locations.

Trying to find the location of a former plantation in Mississippi and instead found this fallen over plaque indicating the presence of an Indian mound and an African-American burial site on top. Could be a good image for a 250th publication!
A screencap from Google Maps of the entry for the Johnson Cemetery Mound plaque in Mississippi. In the street view, the plaque has fallen on the ground. The plaque reads "The Johnson Cemetery site currently consists of a single mound and associated village, but may originally have had second mound. The existing mound is 12 feet in height and was most likely pyramidal in shape, though its dimensions have suffered from erosion. Archacologists have determined that the mound was built in stages by Native Americans during the Mississippi Period, ca. AD 1200-1600. Johnson Cemetery, a 20th-century African American cemetery, is located on the mound's summit."

Perhaps a bit less textual, but still a material way to enjoy tonight’s RBS talk. Reference image from a Charlottesville parking garage.

I’ve been getting a lot of early 2000s nostalgia on insta, mostly it’s candlelight and DVDs but what they’re forgetting is this:
An empty dvd case.

I had a three art class weekend! Highly recommend! Saturday was druksels at @virginiabookarts.bsky.social, Sunday was watercolor, and Monday was drypoint etching.

I’m always going think of that line about watching climate disasters on your phone and then through your phone. My sister had a tree hit her house after a crazy microburst. Everyone is fine but I got the whole story while visiting her and there was much neighborly help but also neighborly creep.
The front of a house tarped and boarded after a tree hit it. There are indentations in the ground where the branches landed.

For the #dhmakes crowd. Did a personal stationary workshop last night at Appalachia Press in Roanoke. Magical studio, expert printer, divine fancy paper.

I don’t really have ambitions to be a library director, but if it happens I hope my photo comes close to this.

New nerd book.
Book cover of “the next greatest thing: 50 years of rural electrification in America”
I could close my eyes and recall the innumerable scenes of the harvest and the unending punishing
tasks
performed
by
hundreds of
thousands of women, growing old prematurely; dying before their time; conscious of the great gap between their lives and the lives of those whom the accident of birth or choice placed in the towns and cities.
Why shouldn't I have been interested in the emancipation of hundreds of thousands of farm women?
—Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska, Cosponsor of the Rural Electrification Act

I spent a lot of time at church as a kid and somehow the only thing that stuck is my mom putting on Jesus Christ Superstar every Easter. Every year that seems weirder and weirder.

I was pretty late to the sourdough trend last time so for this world altering crisis I am going all in on the bread of my childhood: potato flake sourdough.

Haven't been able to find much work on this part of the building, except that they were probably inspired by Roman and Byzantine motifs that came before.

Finally, Mad Love (1995). Drew Barrymore is a doll, though it's hard to see those eyebrows and not think of the damage wrought on a generation of eyebrows. Good for grungy Seattle music and style.

Next was Forces of Nature. I worked as a page at my public library in the early 2000s and I am sure I shelved this dvd many times but never took it home. As someone who teaches a lot of very polite and smart bros, Ben Affleck nails it.

First, Green Card (1990). Andie MacDowell goes through with a scam marriage for what is 100% reasonable in my book: an NY apartment with a beautiful greenhouse. The love interest, Gérard Depardieu, doesn't do much for me, but the plant mom vibes totally do.
