All that has been definitively confirmed is there was a death of a scientist working in an anti-plague in Russia, @bhadeliamd.bsky.social tells @cnbc.com. Conflicting reports of other situation details make it difficult to speculate further details. spr.ly/63326BGFRqg

When I was an intern on the hill, I very much prided myself on being the best one in the office at changing the big water bottle for the water cooler—no spills or splash!

With every one of these stories, my desire to get prophylactic rabies vaccination (as someone without any of the traditional risk factors) increases ever so slightly. Getting the HRIG for PEP from some freak bat/beaver/goat incident just sounds so unpleasant.

WIN: We secured a court order temporarily blocking Donald Trump's USPS from restricting vote-by-mail ahead of the election. This victory protects mail voting and lets elections go on as planned while we fight to block this unlawful election interference. Massachusetts will always defend democracy.

Pennsylvania reports 2 people died of measles. They were unvaccinated. The US was already experiencing the deadliest measles outbreak in more than 30 years, before these preventable deaths. Needless tragedy. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

Two die of measles in Pennsylvania outbreak
The deaths are the first measles-related fatalities in the U.S. this year. Both people had not been vaccinated against the illness.

Would be very ironic if our next big religious liberty-school funding case concerned vaccine requirements, with the religious liberty interest on the side of maintaining the requirements.

This is just one school district, so probably a smaller factor compared to other larger trends, but I imagine that a vax mandate without consequences would decrease uptake. It also raises questions of the incentives of leaving vax enforcement to schools, whose funding is often tied to attendance.
110
Mack Guthrie @mackgu3.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
I also wonder how much of the decrease is attributable to poor enforcement. When I worked in MN (one of the states below 95% coverage), the school district I worked in opted not to enforce mandates with exclusion, in order to prioritize attendance. Noble goal, but represents a real tradeoff.

Yeah I think that’s it, a lot of dumb money getting thrown around now, as opposed to the days when the markets were dominated by politics nerds and Nate Silver-types.

I’m ambivalent on the waiving, but flashing a thumbs down (as we see one gentleman do) at a losing candidate feels mean spirited. I’m glad nobody was booing at least. We need unity heading into the general, not gloating. I’m glad to see the candidates leading by example on this.

I’ll say, historically I put a lot of faith in betting markets, specifically after they correctly predicted Brexit and Trump’s election in 2016 when the polls had said the opposite. They still have value as a source of information (among many), however they also seem to be trending worse lately.

I can’t believe Kalshi’s market had Hong at ~95% odds of winning. Especially after the Michigan senate polls were so far off. El Sayed of course still prevailed but not with the margin pollsters predicted.

Michigan's democratic primary is exhibit 1000+ why we need ranked choice voting. With a field of three legitimate, qualified candidates, we should have elections that express the true will of the voters rather than a forced winnowing of the field to a two-way race. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/05/u...

I’m currently in grad school, and nobody has quite figured out how to deal with AI yet. I unfortunately know of some students who complete almost all of their work with AI. Paper and pencil exams seem to be the only real solution, and I’m surprised not many professors have implemented them yet.

I agree, their choice in a democratic election is what matters. Just stating that I personally would have preferred an alternate outcome.

Mack Guthrie @mackgu3.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
It’s a fair criticism. I still think that Cassidy’s block of past CDC/SG nominees matters. Putting aside his vote on RFK Jr., if the choice is between: RFK Jr. + Casey Means + Dave Weldon Or RFK Jr. + Nicole Saphier + Erica Schwartz I’d take the latter. That’s attributable in part to Cassidy.

Mack Guthrie @mackgu3.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
His loss further cements the trend that taking even a single step out of the GOP/MAGA party line is a death knell for any republican candidate. Just like in Indiana last week. Even if I disagree with Cassidy on many, many things, that’s not good for democracy.

Mack Guthrie @mackgu3.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
I agree it was the wrong move, and given his impeachment vote, he was likely to lose reelection either way. But there is a 0% chance that his replacement will be any better. Maybe it’s splitting hairs but the difference is still worth noting. LA’s GOP primary electorate clearly thought so too.

He will be replaced by someone who is even more of a yes-man for Trump.
1110
Mack Guthrie @mackgu3.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
I’m not sure that’s fair. Cassidy is attributed with blocking Trump’s original picks for surgeon general and CDC director. And obviously voted to impeach in 2021. Yes, he is broadly aligned with Trump, but when the median repub has a 100% vote record w/ pres., differences on the margin matter.

Mack Guthrie @mackgu3.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
I disagree with Cassidy on many issues, but this is bad news for public health. Cassidy is rightfully criticized for his vote in favor of RFK Jr., but he has also blocked Trump’s original picks for surgeon general and CDC. No matter who wins the runoff, he will be replaced by a MAGA yes-man.

If this infection were to become established in humans, I think a new name would be in order... imagine all the ophthalmologists who would have to tell patients they have a virus with "covert mortality" in the name, and reassure them that they are not dying.
