In Dune, humanity fought a war to destroy thinking machines, then banned them for ten thousand years. Overreaction? Modeled as a dynamical system, handing thinking to machines has a trap, and small steps back don't get you out. #Dune #AI #SciFi #ComplexSystems www.tangential.ch/experiments/...

That is a significant result in mathematics, and a different one from the headline. I wrote about the difference between the equation and the problem here: www.tangential.ch/blog/the-equ...

Third, they shape expectations. The headline suggests progress in simulation and engineering, where the result has no direct application. Stated accurately: an AI system produced a machine-checked proof that, if mathematicians accept it, resolves one formulation of a well-known open problem.

Marcel @macelblattner.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Second, they borrow credibility. The machine check confirms the proof is correct for the statement given to the computer. Whether that statement matches the original problem still needs confirmation by mathematicians. The headline lends the check's authority to a claim the check does not cover.

The proof covers the version of the problem in which an external force acts on the fluid. Whether a fluid left to itself can do this remains open. Headlines like "solved" cause three problems. First, they widen the claim: a result about one question becomes a claim about the equations as a whole.

Marcel @macelblattner.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Engineers compute solutions to these equations every day, for aircraft design and weather forecasts. OpenAI addressed a mathematical question about them, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems: whether the equations allow a smoothly moving fluid to reach infinite speed in finite time.

Marcel @macelblattner.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
On September 8, OpenAI announced that an AI system had produced a proof about the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe how fluids move. Much of the coverage reported that OpenAI had solved these equations. The result is something different.

NGC 5128 Centaurus A (LRGB). Astrophoto by Beatrice Heinze (Processing) & Telescope Live (Data).

This galaxy is situated approximately 11 million light-years away from Earth, and was discovered by astronomer James Dunlop in 1826.

I used PixInsight for stacking & processing the data.

Data: Telescope Live
Processing: Beatrice Heinze

Telescope: ASA 500N (50cm, F3.8 -> Newtonian telescope)

Location: El Sauce Observatory, Rio Hurtado valley, Chile (Southern Hemisphere) => Bortle Class 1

Total exposure time: 2 hours

Clear Skies!

2/3 The construction is an open-path Tangential Action Spaces formulation. The coarse anatomical trajectory is prescribed; the hidden state is a baseline-relative endpoint displacement in a higher-dimensional physiological fibre. Re-cutting acts as a challenge readout.

1/3 Planarian fragments can regenerate normal gross anatomy after a transient bioelectric perturbation, yet display altered outcomes upon re-cutting. This implies regeneration stores a persistent hidden state. A new preprint formalizes that state geometrically.
