Husband is gone for the weekend, so I decided to watch Viy (Вий). It’s based off of a book by Nikolai Gogol (think the Ukrainian Edgar Allan Poe). The film is free on YouTube, and the book is free on Librivox and I believe Gutenberg Project. Check it out! #booksky #filmsky

An important corollary to the Surf Dracula tweet that I think should be talked about more, now that we're basically inundated with these types of shows, is that most of them don't get renewed, but even the ones that are don't turn into the weekly adventures of Surf Dracula in the second season.
Screenshot of a tweet from user @topherfluence: "back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get ot see him surf for 5 min in the finale"

I read a series of graphic novels (about King Arthur being resurrected to "save" England) which got very self-referential about stories, and posited that being genre savvy was not necessarily a good thing, as it attracted the attention of the plot, to the character's possible detriment.

The green light for the largest coalmine in NSW history is shocking proof that our governance systems are betraying Australians | Georgina Woods
There is no greater treachery than this failure to face up to the climate crisis. How can we now fend off despair? The Independent Planning Commission’s published reasons for approving the largest coalmine in New South Wales history in the context of mounting death, disaster and despair brought on by global heating reads like a hostage statement. In its decision, the commission accepts that the extension of the Hunter Valley Operations’ mine for a further 19 years – resulting 809m tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution – will materially worsen global warming. The panel members cite CSIRO’s finding that climate change is having a growing effect on the lives and livelihoods of all Australians and that the severity of that impact “will depend on the speed at which global greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced”. They reject the idea that keeping HVO’s coal in the ground would make no difference to global warming. Continue reading...

Australia is at a tipping point. Choosing the brave route – taxing gas and raising revenue – would also, in this case, be the right one.
